An aquarium is the most dependable outing there is for a young child. It is dark, it is calm, the animals move constantly, and nothing needs to be explained. It also works at literally any age, which very few things do.

What to look for

A touch tank. The highest-value exhibit in any aquarium for a child under ten. Rays, small sharks, urchins, sea stars. Find out where it is and when it is open when you walk in, because these often run on limited hours.

Feeding and diver times. A shark feed or a diver in the main tank is the best fifteen minutes of the visit and it happens on a schedule. Plan the visit around it rather than stumbling into it.

A walk-through tunnel. Being underneath the tank is qualitatively different from looking into it, and it is what small kids remember.

Genuine conservation work. The best aquariums here do rescue and rehabilitation. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third-oldest public aquarium in the United States and does real research on Hawaiian reef species; the Aquarium of Niagara runs a rescued sea lion programme. That is a better story to tell a child than a bigger tank.

Knowing what you are buying

There is a real range in this category. University and municipal aquariums like the Waikiki Aquarium are research institutions with modest admission. Some of the branded mall aquariums are considerably more expensive, considerably smaller, and can be walked in forty minutes - fine if you know that going in, frustrating if you were expecting three hours. Check the floor plan and the ticket price together before you commit a day to it.

Moody Gardens in Galveston is worth calling out as the outlier: the aquarium is one pyramid of several, so it functions as a full day rather than a single attraction.

Making it work

  • Go at opening. Aquariums are dark and narrow, and by midday the good tanks are three people deep. First thing, you get the glass to yourselves.
  • Let them stop. A child who wants to watch one jellyfish tank for fifteen minutes is doing the activity correctly.
  • Bring a carrier rather than a stroller for a baby, if you can - the corridors are tight and dim.
  • No flash. Standard rule everywhere, worth explaining to a kid in advance so it is not a telling-off later.
  • Check the membership maths if it is local. Aquariums are a classic go-back-often destination.

Best time

Year-round and entirely weather-proof, which makes this the reliable rainy-day and heat-of-summer plan. Weekday mornings in term time are quietest; school holidays are extremely busy.
