Browse 3 kid-friendly fishing adventures across Hawaii, New York, Oklahoma, & Texas.

Fishing is one of the best outdoor activities for kids - it teaches patience, rewards persistence, and gets families outside in beautiful places. Texas and Oklahoma offer incredible family fishing, from stocked kids ponds at state parks to year-round warm-water lakes and trout streams.

Best Types of Fishing Spots for Kids

Stocked kids ponds - These are purpose-built for young anglers. Ray Roberts Lake State Park has a dedicated kids fishing pond that’s shallow, stocked, and designed to produce bites quickly - exactly what you need to keep a 5-year-old interested. Many city parks also have stocked ponds.

Fishing piers at state parks - Piers let kids fish over deeper water without needing a boat. Daingerfield State Park, Martin Creek Lake, and Galveston Island State Park all have family-friendly piers with good catch rates.

Warm-water lakes - Martin Creek Lake State Park near Tatum is the standout here. Warm-water discharge keeps fish active year-round, so you can catch largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish even in the dead of winter when other lakes are slow.

Trout fishing - The Mountain Fork River in Broken Bow, Oklahoma offers year-round trout fishing in cold, clear water released from the dam. Rainbow and brown trout are stocked regularly. Evening Hole is one of the most beginner-friendly spots on the river.

Getting Kids Started

  • Keep it simple. A basic spincast rod with a bobber and worm is all you need. Fancy gear can come later - right now you want bites.
  • Pick a spot with reliable action. Nothing kills a kid’s interest faster than an hour of casting with no nibbles. Stocked ponds and piers at popular fishing parks produce the most consistent results.
  • Kids under 17 fish free in Texas. No fishing license required for children under 17 in Texas. Adults need a valid license with a freshwater stamp.
  • Bring snacks. Fishing involves a lot of waiting. Snacks, drinks, and a comfortable chair keep kids happy between bites.
  • Celebrate every catch. Even a small sunfish or perch is a trophy when you’re 6 years old. Take the photo, admire the fish, and release it carefully.

Best Seasons

Spring (March-May) is prime fishing season - warming water activates bass and catfish. Fall is excellent too. Winter fishing is best at warm-water lakes like Martin Creek. For trout fishing in Oklahoma, winter and spring are best when water temperatures are coldest.

What to Pack

Fishing rod (spincast for beginners), tackle box with hooks and bobbers, live bait (worms work everywhere), sunscreen, bug spray, a bucket for temporary fish viewing, and towels for cleaning up. A small camping chair for each kid makes the wait comfortable.
