This is the category you need on the day the forecast ruins your plan, and it is aimed squarely at the youngest end - toddlers through about age eight. Nearly all of it is children’s museums, which are less “museum” than a purpose-built indoor playground with a curriculum quietly attached.

What to look for

An age-segregated area. The single most useful feature in the building. A fenced toddler zone means a two-year-old is not being trampled by nine-year-olds, and it lets a parent with two children of different ages actually sit down. Almost every good children’s museum has one.

Water tables and sand tables. Universally the most popular thing in any children’s museum, and the reason to bring a change of clothes.

A pretend-play village. A miniature grocery store, vet clinic, post office or construction site. Children will spend an hour here and it is the exhibit they talk about afterwards.

Somewhere for adults to sit with sightlines. Sounds trivial; is not. A three-hour visit is much more pleasant in a building designed with this in mind.

Practical notes

  • Socks are often required. Many soft-play areas and climbing structures will not admit bare feet. Keep a spare pair in the bag.
  • Go at opening or after 3pm. The middle of the day is when organised groups arrive, and a children’s museum at capacity is a different and much worse place.
  • Weekday mornings in term time are the sweet spot. Rainy Saturdays are the worst possible time and everyone in the city has the same idea.
  • Memberships pay for themselves fast if you have a small child and a bad-weather season. Many participate in reciprocal networks with children’s museums elsewhere.
  • Bring a change of clothes, always. See water table.

The bigger names

The Strong in Rochester is on a different scale from everything else here - it is the national museum of play, with a permanent collection of toys and video games, and it works for adults as well as children. The DoSeum in San Antonio and Children’s Museum Houston are both large and purpose-built. LEGOLAND Discovery Center and Crayola Experience are commercial and priced accordingly, but they deliver exactly what they promise for the right age.

Best time

Year-round, and specifically the days when nothing else works: rain, ice, and the peak of Texas summer, when indoors at midday is the sensible choice rather than the fallback.
