Texas heat calls for water, and the state delivers with some of the best family swimming destinations in the country. From crystal-clear Hill Country swimming holes to Gulf Coast beaches and spring-fed urban pools, there’s a swimming spot for every age and comfort level.

Types of Family Swimming Spots

Spring-fed swimming holes - The Hill Country is famous for these. Places like Barton Springs, Jacob’s Well, and Blue Hole offer impossibly clear, cold water that stays refreshing even in August. The water is clean and beautiful, but can be shockingly cold for little kids - expect 68°F year-round.

Lake beaches - State parks like Cedar Hill, Ray Roberts, and Inks Lake have sandy beaches on freshwater lakes. The water is warmer than springs, and the gentle slope makes them safe for toddlers and beginning swimmers.

River swimming and tubing - The Frio River, Guadalupe River, and Llano River offer gentle currents perfect for family floating. Kids love tubing - sitting in an inner tube and drifting downstream with the current. Water shoes are essential for rocky river bottoms.

Gulf Coast beaches - Galveston, Mustang Island, and Padre Island offer ocean swimming with the added thrill of waves, sand, and saltwater. Lifeguarded beaches like Stewart Beach in Galveston are the safest choice for families.

Swimming Safety with Kids

  • Never swim alone. Always have an adult in the water with young children, even in shallow areas.
  • Check conditions before you go. Swimming holes can close after heavy rain. Flash flooding is a real danger in the Hill Country.
  • Water shoes are non-negotiable. Rocky creek beds, shells on the beach, and slippery lake bottoms all demand foot protection.
  • Bring shade. A beach tent, pop-up canopy, or large umbrella makes a huge difference on hot days, especially for babies and toddlers.
  • Apply sunscreen early and often. Water reflects UV - reapply every 90 minutes.

Best Time for Swimming

Late May through early September is prime swimming season in Texas. Spring-fed spots like Barton Springs are swimmable year-round for the brave. Gulf Coast beaches are best June through August but pleasant in shoulder months too.
