A beautiful lavender farm on the slopes of Haleakala at 4,000 feet with panoramic views of the ocean, the West Maui Mountains, and the central valley. The self-guided walking tour winds through 45 varieties of lavender and other plants. Kids enjoy the scavenger hunt activity and the gift shop has unique lavender-scented products and lavender-flavored treats. The cooler upcountry air is a pleasant break from the coast. The scenery from the farm is gorgeous and the lavender smells incredible. A relaxing, low-key family stop.

Allerton Garden (National Tropical Botanical Garden)

A spectacular botanical garden in a lush valley on Kauai south shore that was used as a filming location for Jurassic Park. The guided tour takes you through themed garden rooms with massive Moreton Bay fig trees, exotic tropical plants, and water features. Kids recognize the Jurassic Park trees immediately and the scale of the ancient trees is genuinely impressive. The valley setting with the stream running through it is beautiful. The McBryde Garden next door offers self-guided tours through a larger area. Reservations are required for both.

Byodo-In Temple

A stunning replica of a 950-year-old Japanese temple nestled at the base of the Koolau Mountains. Kids love feeding the hundreds of koi fish in the pond and ringing the large brass peace bell. The temple and grounds are serene and beautiful with the dramatic green cliffs rising directly behind. Wild peacocks roam the grounds adding color and excitement. The whole visit takes about an hour and pairs perfectly with a stop at the nearby botanical garden. It is one of the most photogenic spots on the island.

Garden of Eden Arboretum

A beautifully maintained 26-acre botanical garden along the Road to Hana with ocean views, rare tropical plants, and the lookout platform where the iconic Jurassic Park scene was filmed. The self-guided trail winds through labeled plant collections with peacocks and other birds roaming freely. The Puohokamoa Falls viewpoint within the garden is stunning. Kids enjoy the duck pond, the colorful peacocks, and looking for the filming locations. It is a peaceful break from the intense Road to Hana driving and the views from the overlook are excellent.

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden

A stunning tropical garden on a dramatic ocean bluff north of Hilo with trails winding through over 2000 species of tropical plants and flowers. The garden descends into Onomea Bay with viewpoints of waterfalls, the ocean, and towering palms. Kids enjoy the boardwalk trail that passes a waterfall and crosses bridges over streams. The variety of exotic flowers, palms, and tropical plants is incredible. This was a filming location for Jurassic Park and you can see why. The beauty is overwhelming and photographs here look like they were taken in a fantasy world.

Hawaii Tropical Fruit Farm

A small family-run tropical fruit farm offering guided tours through orchards growing over 60 varieties of exotic fruits. Kids get to taste fruits they have never heard of straight from the tree, including starfruit, sapodilla, rollinia, and jaboticaba. The guides are passionate and knowledgeable and make the tour interactive for kids. The farm setting on the slopes above Kealakekua Bay has lovely ocean views. A smoothie from the farm stand afterward is the perfect finish. This is an authentic, non-touristy experience that kids genuinely enjoy.

The biggest and best farmers market in Hawaii with over 200 vendors on Wednesdays and Saturdays selling tropical fruits, flowers, crafts, and prepared foods. Kids are fascinated by the exotic fruits they have never seen before like rambutan, dragon fruit, starfruit, and fresh coconuts cut open for drinking. The murals range from a huge train mural by Patrick Ganino to the playful Smile mural and the historic Past and Present piece by Joshua Boulet at 4th and Main. Older kids and teens love picking their favorite walls for photos and the area has a cool downtown vibe with restaurants and shops mixed in. This is hands down one of the best spots for senior portraits if your teen wants an artsy urban feel.
