The Trinity Trails is a massive 100+ mile network of paved trails running along the Trinity River through Fort Worth and into surrounding communities. It’s completely free, open year-round, and one of the best urban trail systems in Texas for families who want to bike, walk, jog, or just get outside without leaving the city.

Best sections for families: The stretch from Trinity Park (near the zoo) to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is one of the most scenic and family-friendly segments - about 3 miles of flat, paved trail along the river with shade trees, playgrounds, and restrooms along the way. The Gateway Park section on the east side is another great family route with wide paths and river views.

Biking with kids: The paved surface and mostly flat terrain make these trails perfect for kids on bikes, trikes, or scooters. The trail is wide enough for side-by-side riding in most sections. Start at one of the many trailhead parking areas and ride as far as your kids can handle - there’s always a park or rest stop nearby to take a break.

Wildlife and nature: Despite being in a major city, the Trinity River corridor is full of wildlife. Herons, egrets, turtles, and occasionally river otters can be spotted along the waterway. Kids love watching for animals while walking or riding. The trails pass through several parks with interpretive nature signs.

Connecting to other attractions: The trail system connects to the Fort Worth Zoo, the Botanic Garden, Panther Island, and several playgrounds and splash pads. You can easily combine a morning trail ride with a zoo visit or picnic in Trinity Park.

Float through old sugar plantation irrigation ditches and tunnels hand-dug over a century ago on an inner tube. The gentle current carries you through 5 tunnels, some pitch black except for your headlamp. Kids love the tunnel sections where the only light is from their own headlamp reflecting on the water. The surrounding scenery is lush and green. The water is warm and the current does most of the work so it is relaxing and exciting at the same time. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard and explore Mirror Lake right in the center of Lake Placid village. The lake is small enough to paddle around in a couple of hours and motorboats are not allowed, keeping the water calm and quiet. The hike to Pharaoh Lake is about 4 miles one way on a well-marked trail through beautiful forest. A wild and rugged gorge carved by Cattaraugus Creek with 600-foot canyon walls, old-growth forest, and deep swimming holes. The creek has carved a dramatic canyon through the landscape and the old-growth hemlocks and white pines are some of the largest in the state. Accessing the swimming holes requires hiking and creek crossings so this is best for families with older adventurous kids. The canyon is ungroomed and wild, which is exactly its appeal. This feels like wilderness despite being in western New York.

One of the most beloved free family parks in the Austin metro sitting where the two forks of the San Gabriel River meet beneath 200-year-old live oak trees. The creative wooden playscape has been recognized as one of the best in the state and kids can spend an entire afternoon climbing the multi-level structure and racing down slides. The 1.6-mile crushed-granite loop trail is flat and wide enough for strollers and bikes side by side with evening lighting for later visits.
