The battleship where Japan formally surrendered in 1945, moored on Ford Island and open to walk through from the teak deck down into the ships interior. Kids stand on the surrender deck, sit in the wardroom, climb up to the bridge and look down the sixteen-inch gun barrels. Guided tours go below into crew quarters and the engine spaces. The state museum of Hawaiian history and natural science, and the first thing to reach for when a beach day on Oahu gets rained out. Hawaiian Hall is three koa-wood galleries of chiefly regalia, feather capes and a whale hanging from the ceiling. Live hot glass shows run through the day where a gaffer pulls molten glass out of a furnace and shapes it into something recognisable in about fifteen minutes, and kids are riveted. A much bigger and better museum than the name suggests, built around Western art, rodeo history and a full-scale indoor frontier town called Prosperity Junction that kids can walk through street by street. There is a childrens cowboy corral with dress-up gear, a stagecoach and a barn area. Galleries cover Native American art, firearms, and the reality of ranch work versus the movie version. The End of the Trail sculpture in the entry hall is enormous. Half a day and it sits right next to Science Museum Oklahoma.

National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame

A museum about women of the American West that is far more fun than that description suggests. The bucking bronc simulator is the thing every kid lines up for, and yes there is video. Exhibits cover rodeo champions, ranchers, and Wild West performers with enough saddles, boots and costumes to hold attention. It is on the small side which makes it a good second stop rather than a whole day. Sits in the Cultural District within walking distance of the science and art museums.

National Videogame Museum

A walk through the entire history of video games from Pong to modern consoles, with a huge amount of it playable rather than behind glass. The recreated 1980s arcade is set to free play so kids can hammer the cabinets without feeding quarters. A living-room setup from each decade lets parents show kids exactly what they grew up on, which is the real draw here for millennial families. There is a giant playable Pong and a wall of consoles in chronological order. Older kids and teens who normally hate museums genuinely like this one.

New York Hall of Science

The natural history halls recreate New York habitats at full scale including an Adirondack wilderness diorama and a Cohoes mastodon. Five floors of genuinely hands-on science in a building that looks like a giant concrete cube someone dropped downtown. Kids race a T. rex on a 50-yard track, ride a chair up a cable in the engineering hall, and stand in a shake platform that simulates a real earthquake. The dinosaur hall is the crowd favorite with full mounted skeletons including an Alamosaurus that fills the room. Three floors of hands-on science plus the Strasenburgh Planetarium next door, which runs star shows and full-dome films on a big tilted dome. Exhibits cover electricity, motion, regional geology and the Seneca and Haudenosaunee history of the area. Younger kids get the How Things Work and Adventure Zone areas where nearly everything can be operated. The planetarium is a separate ticket but is the thing kids remember. A short drive from the Strong, so a Rochester weekend can be built entirely indoors in February.

The University of Oklahomas natural history museum in Norman and one of the largest university museums in the world. The Hall of Ancient Life is built around an Apatosaurus mount and a Pentaceratops skull that holds a world record for size, and the scale of the room does the work. A Discovery Room lets younger kids handle fossils, bones and drawers of specimens. Galleries cover Oklahoma ecology, Native American cultures and the states geological history. Two to three hours and easy to reach from Oklahoma City.

Housed in the old Lone Star Brewery on the River Walk Museum Reach, which is half the appeal because the building looks like a castle. The Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities galleries are the reliable kid win, with mummy cases and Roman glass. There is a strong Latin American folk art collection full of colour and animals that younger kids respond to. Free or reduced admission windows run weekly and family art days happen regularly. Galleries are compact enough to do in ninety minutes.

A huge hands-on science museum with hundreds of exhibits, a planetarium and a high-wire bicycle you ride across a cable above the main hall. Tinkering Garage lets kids build with real tools and materials, and CurioCity is a whole floor of physics and body science stations. Live science demonstrations with explosions and liquid nitrogen run through the day. There is a dedicated area for the under-fives and a small aviation hall with real aircraft. A hands-on science museum in Ithaca with well over a hundred exhibits and a strong reputation among upstate families. Kids operate a walk-in kaleidoscope, launch things across the room, work a two-story ball machine and handle animals in the live animal room. The visitor center for NASA Johnson Space Center and the closest most kids will get to standing inside the real thing. A tram tour runs out to historic Mission Control and the astronaut training facility where hardware for current missions is actually being worked on. Independence Plaza lets you walk through a shuttle replica mounted on a genuine 747 carrier aircraft. Indoors there are moon rocks you can touch, a Saturn V rocket hall, and Apollo capsules. Book the tram early because slots fill and the queue is the one part that will test kids patience.

A museum about the human body that is much less clinical than it sounds. The Amazing Body Pavilion walks you through a giant heart, a set of oversized organs, and a brain you can climb into, with sound and light effects the whole way. Kids see real preserved specimens, test their balance and reflexes, and try out surgical tools in a simulated operating room. It is smaller than the natural science museum across the park, which makes it a good second stop or a lower-stakes option with younger kids. Sits right in the Museum District so it pairs well with the childrens museum.

The best indoor family destination in upstate New York, full stop, and worth a drive from anywhere in the state. It is enormous: a walk-through Sesame Street set, a full arcade with classic cabinets, a butterfly garden, a working carousel, a Berenstain Bears house and the National Toy Hall of Fame. The 2023 expansion added a whole neighbourhood of new play worlds and an indoor skyline bridge. Older kids and teens stay engaged through the video game history halls while toddlers have their own zones. Budget a full day and expect to still miss things.

Austins childrens museum and the default answer when the weather ruins a Barton Springs plan. Everything is designed to be pulled, poured, built or knocked over, with a huge water play area, a light and shadow lab, and a maker studio with real tools. There is a separate space for babies and crawlers so the under-twos are not steamrolled by big kids. Outdoor backyard play space extends the visit on nice days. Two to three hours is realistic and there is a cafe on site when everyone crashes.

A real World War II submarine you go down inside and walk through end to end, which is the kind of thing kids talk about for years. The passages are genuinely tight, the bunks are stacked beside torpedoes, and an audio tour explains what life aboard was actually like. An adjoining indoor museum holds torpedoes, a Poseidon missile and submarine artifacts. It is at the Pearl Harbor visitor center so it slots in alongside the memorial and aviation museum. Not suitable for strollers and small kids need to manage steep ladders.

A natural history and Texas heritage museum on the edge of Brackenridge Park with a strong dinosaur hall and a lot of hands-on space. The Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery has mounted skeletons and a dig area, and the McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery covers the states ecoregions with taxidermy dioramas kids can get close to. The four-story HEB Body Adventure is essentially an indoor obstacle course about how bodies work. Riverside outdoor areas and a treehouse-style science center add more if the weather holds. Easily a half day.
