A protected natural area on Maui south shore with excellent snorkeling in calm, clear water over lava rock reef. The reserve sits on the last lava flow on Maui and the underwater landscape of lava formations covered in coral is fascinating. Fish, turtles, and eels are common. The entry is over lava rock so water shoes are essential. There are no facilities and no lifeguards so this is for families comfortable with independent ocean swimming. The marine life here is abundant because the area is well protected.

Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge

A historic lighthouse on a dramatic cliff point that is now part of a national wildlife refuge. The views from the point are spectacular with waves crashing on the rocks below. The refuge is home to nesting seabirds including red-footed boobies, Laysan albatross, and great frigatebirds that kids can observe from close range. Humpback whales are visible from the point during winter months. The visitor center has exhibits on the wildlife and Hawaiian history of the area. It is a beautiful, peaceful spot with a lot to see in a short visit.

Pilot Knob Preserve

A 157-acre preserve managed by the Lake George Land Conservancy with gentle trails winding through meadows and forests above the southern tip of Lake George. The 1.5-mile loop trail is perfect for younger hikers and offers nice views of the lake from several overlooks. Wildflowers fill the meadows in spring and early summer. It is a quieter alternative to the more crowded Lake George trails and a great spot for a nature walk with kids who are not ready for a big summit hike.

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

A federal wildlife refuge protecting endangered golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos where a morning hike during spring is one of the genuinely magical free experiences near Austin. Kids can pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at the Doeskin Ranch visitor center and work through wildlife observation challenges on the trail. The 0.4-mile Pond and Prairie trail is flat and manageable for very young children with excellent butterfly and wildflower sightings in spring. Warbler Vista adds another easy loop where older kids can scan the cedar-juniper hillsides for the distinctive black-and-yellow warbler with binoculars.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

The winter home of the endangered whooping crane and one of the most important wildlife refuges on the Texas coast. The 16-mile auto loop lets families drive through diverse coastal habitats spotting deer and javelinas along the way. The observation tower at the end of the Heron Flats Trail gives sweeping views over the salt marsh where whooping cranes feed. Inside the visitor center kids can earn Junior Refuge Manager badges.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

A 44,000-acre coastal prairie refuge south of Houston that is one of the best birding spots in the country. The auto tour loop lets families spot hundreds of bird species from the car which is perfect for younger kids with short attention spans. Alligators are commonly seen basking alongside the road and the observation platforms give elevated views over freshwater marshes. The annual Christmas Bird Count here is legendary.

Colleyville Nature Center

A compact but well-designed nature center with paved and unpaved trails looping through forest and around a small pond. The nature playscape lets little kids build with natural materials and the small indoor exhibit area has live reptiles and amphibians. It is a perfect low-key outing for toddlers and preschoolers who are building their stamina for longer hikes.

Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center

A 312-acre park along Spring Creek where families can hike boardwalk trails through bottomland forest and swamp habitat without driving far from Houston. The nature center has live animal exhibits featuring local species and the staff runs free guided canoe trips and nature programs year-round. The Redbud Trail boardwalk through the cypress swamp is magical and kids are fascinated by the knobby cypress knees poking up from the water.

John Bunker Sands Wetland Center

A beautifully designed wetland preserve southeast of Dallas where kids can walk boardwalks over marshes teeming with herons and turtles. The visitor center has interactive exhibits about wetland ecology and water conservation. Guided bird walks and nature programs rotate seasonally and the staff is excellent at engaging younger visitors.

Southwest Nature Preserve

A 58-acre urban nature preserve with three miles of trails through forest and tallgrass prairie right in the heart of Arlington. The Loop Trail is short enough for younger kids and leads to a scenic overlook above a small lake. It is one of the quieter preserves in the metroplex and rarely feels crowded even on weekends.
