The Dunagan Visitor Center has exhibits about the unique ecology of this sand dune system. Sunset visits are especially magical as the light turns the sand golden.

Cedar Hill State Park sits right on Joe Pool Lake barely 20 minutes from downtown Dallas, and it feels way more remote than it actually is. With over 1,800 acres of rolling tallgrass prairie and lakeshore, this is the go-to park for DFW families who want a real outdoor experience without the long drive.

Swimming and lake activities: The park’s swim beach is the main draw for families with younger kids. The shallow, sandy entry makes it easy for toddlers and beginners. Fishing from the shore is popular - Joe Pool Lake is stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. You can also rent kayaks and canoes from the park store during peak season.

Hiking trails: The Talala Trail is the best loop for families - it’s about 2.5 miles through shaded woodland with lake views. For a shorter walk, the interpretive nature trail near the amphitheater is flat and easy for little legs. Birdwatching is excellent here, especially during spring migration when warblers and other songbirds pass through.

Mountain biking (DORBA trails): Older kids and teens will love the DORBA mountain bike trails - about 15 miles of singletrack ranging from beginner-friendly to technical. The trail system is well-maintained and clearly marked. Bike rentals are available in nearby Cedar Hill if you don’t have your own.

Camping: With 350 campsites including water and electric hookups, Cedar Hill is one of the easiest state parks to book for an overnight camping trip close to Dallas. Sites near the lake are the most popular - reserve well in advance for spring and fall weekends. There are also screened shelters if you want the camping experience without setting up a tent.

Entrance fees: $5 per person per day for adults (13+), kids 12 and under are free. Camping ranges from $10-$30 per night depending on the site type. Texas State Parks Pass ($70/year) gets your whole family in free.

Tip for families: Arrive early on summer weekends - the parking lots near the swim beach fill up by 10 AM. Weekday visits are much more relaxed, with the beach nearly to yourselves.

Cleburne State Park

One of the only spots in North Texas where families can try real rock climbing on natural sandstone formations at Penitentiary Hollow. The cliffs range from 20 to 40 feet and draw climbers of all skill levels.
