A mid-size aquarium a short walk from the falls, and the obvious move when the mist and wind make the gorge unbearable with kids. Humboldt penguins, harbour seals and California sea lions get daily feeding and training sessions that are the highlight for most children. There are Great Lakes tanks, a shark and ray touch pool, and a small rainforest area. It takes about ninety minutes which fits neatly into a Niagara day. Combining it with the state park makes a rainy Niagara trip actually work.

A hands-on aquarium in north Austin that leans hard into interaction rather than big display tanks. Kids feed stingrays, touch sea stars in shallow pools, and get into an aviary where birds land on them for a cup of nectar. There are reptiles, a small shark tank and encounter areas staffed by keepers. It is smaller and scrappier than a major-city aquarium, so set expectations accordingly, but the touch-everything format is exactly what younger kids want. Less a traditional aquarium and more an indoor rainforest you walk down through, starting at the treetops and spiraling to the water at the bottom. Sloths, toucans and monkeys move around in the open air above your head, which surprises first-time visitors every single time. Down at the base there is a walk-through tunnel with sharks and rays overhead and a manatee exhibit. It is compact enough that toddlers do not melt down and interesting enough that older kids stay engaged. The whole route is one-way and stroller-friendly.

Part aquarium, part small amusement park, which is either a bonus or a hazard depending on your kids. The Adventure Exhibit runs through themed zones including a sunken temple, a Louisiana swamp with alligators, and a shark tunnel. White tigers live in a large indoor habitat that surprises everyone the first time. Outside there is a small train, a Ferris wheel and a carousel, plus a restaurant with a huge central tank. Rides are individually priced on top of aquarium admission so decide the budget before you walk in.

Three glass pyramids on the Galveston waterfront, each a separate attraction, and together the best bad-weather backup on the Texas coast. The Aquarium Pyramid holds penguins, seals, sharks and a Humboldt penguin colony behind floor-to-ceiling glass. The Rainforest Pyramid is a genuine indoor jungle with free-flying birds, monkeys, sloths and a bat cave. A 3D theater and a ropes course fill out the rest. A compact mall aquarium built almost entirely around what small kids like: eye-level tanks, touch pools with sea stars, and a curved underwater tunnel with rays and sharks gliding overhead. The whole route takes about an hour which is exactly right for preschoolers. Interactive quiz stations along the way keep older siblings from getting bored.
