Aiea Loop Trail

A 4.8-mile loop trail through a forest of eucalyptus, Norfolk pines, and native plants with views of Pearl Harbor and the south shore. Akaka Falls State Park

A short paved loop trail through a lush tropical forest to a viewpoint overlooking a stunning 442-foot waterfall, one of the tallest in Hawaii. The 0.4-mile loop is accessible for strollers and passes through groves of bamboo, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowers. The falls plunge into a deep gorge surrounded by green vegetation and the scale is impressive. A smaller waterfall, Kahuna Falls, is visible from another viewpoint on the same loop. One of the safest swimming beaches on Kauai north shore thanks to the longest fringing reef in the state that protects the shoreline from waves. The water is calm, warm, and shallow for a long way out making it excellent for young children. The reef creates a natural lagoon that is great for beginning snorkeling. A massive golden sand beach that stretches for a third of a mile with some of the most beautiful turquoise water on Maui. The beach is wide and uncrowded with a dramatic cinder cone at one end. The shore break can be powerful so this beach is better for older kids who are strong swimmers. Bodyboarding here is excellent when the waves are right. The sand is incredibly soft and the overall beauty of the setting is stunning. Sunset here is a show. Little Beach, over the hill, is more protected for younger kids but can be clothing-optional.

Byodo-In Temple

A stunning replica of a 950-year-old Japanese temple nestled at the base of the Koolau Mountains. Kids love feeding the hundreds of koi fish in the pond and ringing the large brass peace bell. The temple and grounds are serene and beautiful with the dramatic green cliffs rising directly behind. Wild peacocks roam the grounds adding color and excitement. The whole visit takes about an hour and pairs perfectly with a stop at the nearby botanical garden. It is one of the most photogenic spots on the island.

A natural blowhole on Kauai south shore that shoots seawater through a lava tube creating a geyser-like eruption and an eerie moaning sound. Kids are mesmerized by the unpredictable eruptions that can shoot 50 feet into the air. The viewing area is safe and paved with a railing. The sound the blowhole makes as air is forced through the tube is haunting and tied to a Hawaiian legend about a giant lizard trapped in the rock. A 500-year-old lava tube you can walk through inside Volcanoes National Park. The paved trail descends through a tree fern forest and enters the illuminated tube which stretches about 600 feet long and is large enough to stand upright. Kids are thrilled by the idea of walking through a tunnel made by flowing lava. The tube is lit but a flashlight enhances the experience. The surrounding fern forest is prehistoric-looking and adds to the adventure. The whole loop takes about 20 minutes and is one of the most popular stops in the park.

Tide Pools at Makapu'u

Natural lava rock tide pools on the coast below the Makapu u Lighthouse Trail that fill with ocean water and create natural swimming holes. A small, sheltered crescent beach in Wailea that offers some of the easiest and best snorkeling on Maui south shore. The reef starts just offshore and the water is clear and calm most of the year. Sea turtles are frequently spotted grazing on the rocks to the right side of the beach. The beach has restrooms, showers, and a grassy area for picnics. It is less crowded than nearby Wailea Beach and the snorkeling is better. The sandy entry makes it comfortable for kids. A perfect morning snorkeling spot before exploring the rest of the Wailea Beach Path.
