Biscayne is almost entirely water, which means the visitor centre is a starting point rather than a destination - the park proper needs a boat. Concession-run snorkel trips go out to patch reef in the bay where the water is warm and generally calmer than the outer reef off Key Largo, and there are glass-bottom and island cruises for families not swimming. From shore you get a short boardwalk, a jetty and a good view across the bay, which is worth an hour but is not the park. Trips are weather-dependent and cancel often, so build slack into the plan.

Buck Island was one of the first marine areas in the world given national monument protection, and access is strictly through licensed concession boats out of Christiansted - you cannot simply turn up. The underwater trail runs through a barrier reef of elkhorn coral in a lagoon, with signs on the seabed, and the fish density inside the reef is far beyond anything reachable from a beach. Most trips also stop at Turtle Beach on the island’s west end, a stretch of empty white sand. The crossing takes about half an hour and can be bumpy. Full-day trips include lunch and more swimming time.

Pennekamp protects the northern end of the only living barrier reef in the continental United States, and the snorkel trips are the point: a boat runs out to the reef, drops a line, and you swim over coral heads full of parrotfish and barracuda. The reef is two and a half hours round trip and can be choppy, so there is a real minimum age - roughly five for a confident swimmer, and a calm forecast matters more than the season. For younger children the park has two protected beaches, Cannon Beach with a scattered replica shipwreck to snorkel over in chest-deep water, and Far Beach, plus a glass-bottom boat for anyone who would rather stay dry.

A 1926 John Alden designed wooden schooner, the same boat used in the 1956 film High Society, running two-hour public sails off the southern tip of Seneca Lake. She carries up to 22 passengers, with cushioned seating for sixteen on the cabin top if the weather turns. Water and juices are included. Soft-soled shoes are required on deck, which is worth knowing before you get to the pier with a kid in sandals. Up to four departures a day makes this easy to slot into a Watkins Glen trip alongside the gorge.

Note that the dinner and sunset sails are adults only, so the daytime snorkel trips are the family option.

Boat tours along the leeward coast offer some of the best wild dolphin and sea turtle encounters in Hawaii. Spinner dolphins frequently swim alongside and under the boats in pods of dozens. Several operators also stop at snorkeling reefs where sea turtles are almost guaranteed. The leeward coast is drier and calmer than other parts of Oahu making for comfortable boat conditions. Seeing dolphins leap and spin in the wild is one of those magical moments that stays with kids forever. Choose operators who follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines.

Maui is one of the best whale watching destinations in the world. Humpback whales migrate here every winter and the waters between Maui, Lanai, and Molokai are a prime calving ground. Boat tours regularly encounter breaching, tail slapping, and mother-calf pairs at close range. Kids are absolutely spellbound by these massive creatures. The Pacific Whale Foundation and other operators run multiple daily departures. Even from shore, whales are often visible from December through April. The experience is awe-inspiring at any age.

Visibility often exceeds 150 feet and the protected interior of the crescent-shaped crater is calm and teeming with tropical fish. Sea turtles and sometimes reef sharks are spotted in the deeper areas.
