The trail gains about 2000 feet of elevation so it is a real workout and best suited for families with older kids who enjoy a challenge. The summit has wide open rock slabs perfect for spreading out a snack. On a clear day you can see all the way to Vermont. This is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Lake George region.

A challenging but rewarding 3.5-mile round trip hike down (and back up) a steep trail to the Captain Cook Monument at the edge of Kealakekua Bay. The payoff is some of the best shore-access snorkeling in Hawaii in a marine sanctuary with spinner dolphins, tropical fish, and pristine coral. The hike down through dry scrubland drops about 1400 feet. The climb back up in the heat is the hard part so bring extra water. For families with fit older kids who can handle the physical demands, the snorkeling at the bottom is genuinely world-class.

Indian Head and Rainbow Falls Trail

A stunning 10-mile round trip hike that takes you past Rainbow Falls, a towering 150-foot cascade, and up to the Indian Head cliff with one of the most famous views in the Adirondacks. The cliff-top view looks straight down the Ausable Lakes valley flanked by High Peaks on both sides. This is a long and moderately challenging day for families with strong older hikers but the combination of a massive waterfall and a world-class view makes it one of the most rewarding hikes in the park. Start early and pack plenty of food.

The first two miles of the famous Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi ai Beach offer a taste of the Na Pali Coast without the full 11-mile commitment. The trail hugs dramatic cliffs above the ocean with stunning views around every corner. The trail is narrow, muddy, and has significant drop-offs so this is best for older kids who are sure-footed. The beach at the end is a beautiful reward with a wild surf and dramatic valley backdrop. Do not swim here as currents are extremely dangerous. A permit and reservation are required.

Koko Crater Railway Trail

A staircase of 1048 old railway ties straight up the side of Koko Crater to the rim at 1208 feet. This is essentially a giant outdoor stairmaster and kids who are up for the challenge love the sense of accomplishment at the top. The views from the rim are panoramic covering Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, and the east side of Oahu. The climb is relentless with no shade so start early and bring lots of water. There is a gap in the ties about two-thirds up where a bridge once stood that requires some scrambling.

Niagara Gorge Trail

A dramatic hiking trail along the bottom of the Niagara Gorge below the Falls with massive boulders, whirlpool rapids, and views you cannot get from the top. The trail descends 300 steps into the gorge and follows the river past huge rock formations. The power of the rapids at the Whirlpool is humbling and the boulder scrambling keeps older kids engaged. This is a challenging trail that requires sure footing and is not for young children. The Discovery Center at the top has exhibits on gorge geology. A completely different perspective on Niagara Falls.

Slide Mountain Trail

At 4180 feet, Slide Mountain is the highest peak in the Catskills and a worthy goal for families with experienced young hikers. The most popular route from the Slide Mountain parking area is about 5.6 miles round trip with a 1700-foot elevation gain through beautiful boreal forest. The summit is wooded but a viewpoint near the top gives sweeping views south. Reaching the top is a real accomplishment and a great milestone for kids building toward bigger mountains. The trail is well-marked and well-maintained.

Snowy Mountain Trail

The tallest mountain in the southern Adirondacks at 3899 feet with a fire tower on the summit and expansive views. The 7.4-mile round trip trail gains about 2100 feet through dense forest and is a serious hike for families with experienced young hikers. The fire tower adds elevation and the 360-degree view from the top encompasses Indian Lake, Blue Mountain, and dozens of peaks stretching to the horizon. This is often cited as one of the most rewarding hikes in the Adirondacks. A real achievement for any kid who makes it to the top.

Storm King State Park

A rugged Hudson Highlands park with challenging trails and some of the most dramatic views of the Hudson River anywhere. The Stillman Trail to the Butter Hill summit is a moderately strenuous loop with panoramic views over the river, West Point, and the surrounding mountains. The trails involve rocky scrambles and steep sections so this is best for families with older kids who are comfortable on rough terrain. The payoff views are worth every step. On a clear day you can see the skyline of New York City.
