Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a rehabilitation facility that happens to admit visitors, and the difference from a conventional aquarium is the point: the animals are rescues, many are non-releasable because of their injuries, and the medical work happens in front of you. It became widely known as the home of Winter, the dolphin fitted with a prosthetic tail, whose story became the film Dolphin Tale. There are turtle and otter habitats, presentations through the day and a boat tour on the bay. It is the obvious answer to a rainy day or a red tide on this coast.

Lovers Key is four barrier islands with a back-bay estuary that reliably holds manatees and bottlenose dolphins, both visible from the water and often from the bridge. The five-mile mangrove paddling trail is protected and shallow, and the tunnels are the kind of thing children remember. The beach is a walk from the parking areas - roughly a thousand feet over the mid-beach bridge - which keeps it quieter than the drive-up beaches nearby, but it also means carrying everything, so pack light with small children. The park took storm surge from Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024 and services have not all come back the same: the tram is gone for good, and on-site rentals have changed hands. Bring your own boat, or ring ahead.

A challenging but rewarding 3.5-mile round trip hike down (and back up) a steep trail to the Captain Cook Monument at the edge of Kealakekua Bay. The payoff is some of the best shore-access snorkeling in Hawaii in a marine sanctuary with spinner dolphins, tropical fish, and pristine coral. The hike down through dry scrubland drops about 1,400 feet. The climb back up in the heat is the hard part so bring extra water. For families with fit older kids who can handle the physical demands, the snorkeling at the bottom is genuinely world-class.

A unique snorkeling spot where warm water discharged from a nearby power plant attracts an incredible diversity of marine life. Spinner dolphins, sea turtles, eagle rays, and dense schools of fish are regularly seen in the warm outflow channel. The visibility is good and the marine life density is higher than almost anywhere else on Oahu. The entry is over rocks and there are no lifeguards so this is best for experienced swimmer families. When conditions are calm, the snorkeling is genuinely world-class and free.

A stunning crescent-shaped beach on Lanai south shore that is widely considered one of the best beaches in Hawaii. The marine preserve protects the excellent reef and snorkeling is outstanding with spinner dolphins frequently visiting the bay. Tide pools on the left side of the beach are full of sea life that fascinates kids for hours. The beach has lifeguards, restrooms, and shaded picnic areas. In winter, humpback whales are visible from shore. Getting to Lanai requires a ferry from Maui or a flight, which adds to the adventure.
