The University of Texas art museum, and the reason to bring kids is Ellsworth Kellys Austin, a freestanding stone chapel with colored glass windows that throw shifting color across the floor. Kids walk in and immediately get it without anyone explaining anything. Inside the main building the galleries are manageable in size and there are family guides and art-making activities at the front desk. Free admission days run regularly. Combine it with the Bullock a few blocks away for a full downtown rainy day.

A compact museum of Western art and artifacts right on the River Walk, in the beautifully restored old public library building. Kids gravitate to the stagecoach, the Pancho Villa saddle, and the collection of historic firearms and Native American artifacts. Three floors but small ones, so you are in and out in about an hour without anyone getting museum-legs. Good option when you are already downtown and the sky opens up. The sculpture courtyard beside the river is worth a look on the way out.

Three floors telling the story of Texas, anchored by the recovered wreck of La Belle, a French ship from 1686 displayed as an actual excavated hull. Kids respond to the shipwreck, the Goddess of Liberty statue in the atrium, and the full-size artifacts far more than to the wall text. An IMAX theater on site runs both documentaries and current releases, which is a useful rainy-afternoon backup. Right across from the Capitol so you can combine both in one downtown trip. Free family days and hands-on carts run on select weekends.

Part aquarium, part small amusement park, which is either a bonus or a hazard depending on your kids. The Adventure Exhibit runs through themed zones including a sunken temple, a Louisiana swamp with alligators, and a shark tunnel. White tigers live in a large indoor habitat that surprises everyone the first time. Outside there is a small train, a Ferris wheel and a carousel, plus a restaurant with a huge central tank. Rides are individually priced on top of aquarium admission so decide the budget before you walk in.

Free admission, air conditioning and contemporary Hawaii art in a historic Spanish Mission style building downtown, which is a good combination on a wet Honolulu afternoon. The collection is entirely by artists connected to Hawaii and skews colourful and accessible rather than difficult. There is a dedicated hands-on family gallery where kids can make art and use activity kits. Because it is free you can walk in for twenty minutes and leave without guilt. Sculpture garden outside for when the rain lets up.

The only royal palace on American soil, home of Hawaiis last monarchs and a genuinely moving place to bring older kids. Guided and audio tours take you through the throne room, the grand staircase and the upstairs room where Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned after the overthrow. The palace had electric light and telephones before the White House did, which is the detail kids remember. Everyone wears booties over their shoes to protect the koa floors. Tours run on a schedule so book ahead, and note it is not a place for restless toddlers.

The draw for kids here is the Dale Chihuly glass collection, one of the largest anywhere, including a fifty-five foot glass tower in the atrium that looks like frozen fireworks. The rest of the museum is a manageable size with American and European painting and rotating exhibitions. Family art activities and drop-in studio days run on select weekends. A film theater on site screens independent and family films. An hour and a half covers it, and the Chihuly tower alone is worth walking in for.

Housed in the old Lone Star Brewery on the River Walk Museum Reach, which is half the appeal because the building looks like a castle. The Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities galleries are the reliable kid win, with mummy cases and Roman glass. There is a strong Latin American folk art collection full of colour and animals that younger kids respond to. Free or reduced admission windows run weekly and family art days happen regularly. Galleries are compact enough to do in ninety minutes.

A small aquarium right on the River Walk built at toddler eye level, with a walk-through ocean tunnel where rays and sharks pass overhead. Touch pools let kids handle sea stars and anemones under supervision. The route is short and one-way, roughly an hour, which is a feature rather than a flaw with preschoolers. Its location inside the Shops at Rivercenter means you can duck in from a downpour without moving the car. Good rainy-day filler between River Walk stops rather than a destination on its own.

A walkable stretch of downtown Main Street packed with colorful murals by local and nationally known artists. The murals range from a huge train mural by Patrick Ganino to the playful Smile mural and the historic Past and Present piece by Joshua Boulet at 4th and Main. Older kids and teens love picking their favorite walls for photos and the area has a cool downtown vibe with restaurants and shops mixed in. This is hands down one of the best spots for senior portraits if your teen wants an artsy urban feel.
