Big Thicket National Preserve

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where nine different ecosystems converge creating one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America. The Kirby Nature Trail is a 2.4-mile loop through old-growth forest with massive beech and magnolia trees that give kids a sense of how Texas looked before settlement. Guided canoe trips on Village Creek pass through stunning scenery. The preserve is spread across multiple units so check the visitor center for the best current trails.

Caddo Lake State Park

The only natural lake in Texas surrounded by one of the largest cypress swamps in the world with moss-draped trees rising from dark tannic water that feels straight out of a storybook. Kayaking and canoeing through the maze of bayous and sloughs is an unforgettable family adventure. The CCC-built cabins are among the most charming in the state park system. Kids are mesmerized by the otherworldly atmosphere and the abundance of turtles and wading birds.

Daingerfield State Park

A small gem of a park built around an 80-acre lake that is widely considered one of the most beautiful spots in East Texas especially in fall when the sweetgums and oaks blaze with color. Kids can swim at the sandy beach or rent paddleboats to explore the lake. The 2.5-mile trail circling the lake is easy enough for young hikers and the CCC-era stone dam is an impressive piece of history.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park

A well-maintained park on a 9,460-acre East Texas lake with excellent fishing and a roped swimming area that families appreciate. The lighted fishing pier is great for evening outings and the bike trail loop through pine forest is fun for kids of all riding abilities. Campsites are shaded and well-spaced with some sitting right on the water. It is less visited than many state parks which means weekend availability is usually good.

Martin Creek Lake State Park

A 286-acre park on a warm-water lake that is one of the best family fishing destinations in East Texas. The lake is stocked and the fishing pier makes it easy for kids to cast a line without needing a boat. The swim beach is well-maintained and the campground sits in a shaded pine forest. Island campsites accessible only by paddle craft give adventurous families a unique overnight experience.

Mission Tejas State Park

A peaceful East Texas park centered around a replica of the first Spanish mission in the region giving kids a tangible connection to early Texas history. The trails wind through towering hardwood forest and the CCC-built log cabin serves as a fascinating visitor center. Fall color in the surrounding Davy Crockett National Forest is some of the best in Texas. It is small and uncrowded which makes it perfect for families who want a quiet weekend in the woods.

Tyler State Park

A beautifully maintained CCC-era state park with a spring-fed lake surrounded by towering pines and hardwoods. The swim area has a sandy beach and the park rents paddleboats and kayaks. Over 13 miles of trails loop through East Texas piney woods and the mountain bike trails are well-regarded. The historic stone and timber structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps give the park a timeless character.

Village Creek State Park

A beautiful park on Village Creek in the Big Thicket region where the tannin-stained water runs clear through white sandbars under a canopy of hardwoods and pines. Kayaking and canoeing down the creek is the signature experience and the gentle current makes it accessible for families with older kids. The campground is right on the creek and the sandbar beaches are perfect for setting up camp chairs and watching the kids wade.
