Finger-Lakes

Cornell’s sailing center on the east shore of Cayuga Lake, which sells youth camps, classes and private lessons to the general public rather than just to the university. Kids aged 8 to 12 do full days; teenagers 13 to 17 join an afternoon-only session. Days mix on-water lessons with water safety and seamanship, plus team-building and shore games when the wind dies. A seasonal membership is also available, which buys a family access to the fleet during open hours instead of a single week of class.

A 1926 John Alden designed wooden schooner, the same boat used in the 1956 film High Society, running two-hour public sails off the southern tip of Seneca Lake. She carries up to 22 passengers, with cushioned seating for sixteen on the cabin top if the weather turns. Water and juices are included. Soft-soled shoes are required on deck, which is worth knowing before you get to the pier with a kid in sandals. Up to four departures a day makes this easy to slot into a Watkins Glen trip alongside the gorge.

A nonprofit sailing school on the east shore of Seneca Lake, hosted by but separate from the local yacht club, formed to give the community access to seamanship skills. Opti Week takes the youngest sailors from age 7; Adventure Week and Girls Week run 9 to 17 at all ability levels, capped at twelve to sixteen sailors. Private instruction is explicitly configurable for a family, up to two adults plus two children. Best of all, the academy runs free public First Sail days off the Geneva farmers market waterfront, which is the cheapest way in the state to find out whether your kid actually likes sailing.

Far more entertaining than a glass museum has any right to be. Live hot glass shows run through the day where a gaffer pulls molten glass out of a furnace and shapes it into something recognisable in about fifteen minutes, and kids are riveted. You can book Make Your Own Glass sessions where children blow an ornament or fuse a picture with staff doing the dangerous parts. The collection itself spans 3500 years and the contemporary gallery is full of enormous sculptural pieces. A genuine full-day destination and one of the strongest indoor options in the Finger Lakes.

A small state park on the west branch of Keuka Lake with campsites split between an open lakeside area and a shaded wooded loop, plus a swimming beach and a boat launch. Keuka is the quietest of the big Finger Lakes and the least crowded to swim in, and the campground has a genuinely relaxed feel. The bluff road above the park has some of the best lake views in the region, and Hammondsport at the south end has a walkable village square with ice cream and the Glenn Curtiss aviation museum.

Letchworth is seventeen miles long, which is exactly why staying inside it matters: from the Highbanks camping area you can reach the three main waterfalls, the overlooks and the trailheads without repeatedly driving in from outside. The park has a large campground plus rental cabins in the woods, along with a swimming pool complex that saves many hot afternoons. Sunrise over the gorge with the mist still in it is the reason people book a second night. Autumn foliage weekends are the busiest of the year.

A natural history museum built around fossils, with a right whale skeleton hanging overhead and a mastodon skeleton found in the Finger Lakes. The whole layout walks you forward through geological time, which gives kids a spine to hang everything on rather than a random pile of exhibits. There is a fossil lab where you can watch preparators working on real specimens and a hands-on area where kids handle fossils themselves. The Hyde Park mastodon is the local star. Compact enough for two hours and a fifteen minute drive from the Ithaca gorges.

Treman has the single best swimming setup in the Finger Lakes: a stone-walled natural pool at the base of a waterfall, with a diving board and lifeguards. Staying at the park campground or in one of its cabins means you can be in that pool the moment it opens. Campsites sit in the lower park near the swimming area, and the cabins are simple wooden units with beds and electricity but no plumbing. The Gorge Trail up to Lucifer Falls is the other reason to be here, and it starts a short walk away.

One of the largest campgrounds in the Finger Lakes, built on the grounds of a former naval training base on the east shore of Seneca Lake. The scale means you can usually find a site here when the smaller gorge parks are full, and the park has a swimming pool, a marina, a beach, ball fields and a small military museum on site. Sites are mostly open and grassy rather than deeply wooded. It is central to the whole Seneca Lake loop, with Watkins Glen about half an hour south.

A hands-on science museum in Ithaca with well over a hundred exhibits and a strong reputation among upstate families. Kids operate a walk-in kaleidoscope, launch things across the room, work a two-story ball machine and handle animals in the live animal room. The Curiosity Corner is a soft, quiet space for the under-fives. An outdoor science playground and the Sagan Planet Walk extend things when the weather is decent. It is the reason a rainy Finger Lakes gorge day does not have to be a write-off.

A compact gorge park where two stream-fed swimming pools are dammed right in the creek bed, so kids swim in cold moving water with rock walls on either side. The campground sits in the woods a short walk from the gorge trail and the pools. It is much smaller and less known than Watkins Glen or Letchworth, which is the appeal: the same kind of scenery without the parking chaos. Dansville is minutes away for supplies, and Letchworth is a half hour north if you want to combine the two.

Campsites and a set of small cabins sit on the hillside above Cayuga Lake at the park that holds the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rockies. The flat gorge trail to the base of the 215-foot falls is short and stroller-passable, which makes this one of the easiest big-waterfall payoffs for families with toddlers. Down at lake level there is a swimming beach and a marina. Summer weekends bring free concerts at the park, and Ithaca is twenty minutes south for a rainy-day plan.

The campground sits on the hill above the gorge, which means you can walk down to the Gorge Trail at eight in the morning before the tour buses and the day-trippers arrive. That timing changes the experience of the park completely: the same nineteen waterfalls, none of the shuffling crowd. Sites are open and grassy with some wooded loops, and there is a swimming pool in the park. Seneca Lake and the Finger Lakes wineries are minutes away, and the campground is a short walk from the village.

A beautiful park with a swimming area at the base of Buttermilk Falls, a cascading waterfall that drops over 500 feet through a series of pools and rapids. The swimming pool at the base is natural, fed by the falls, and staffed with lifeguards in summer. The Gorge Trail climbs alongside the falls with views at every turn. Kids love the combination of swimming and waterfall exploration. The park also has a playground, picnic shelters, and a separate trail along Larch Meadows. It is less crowded than Taughannock and Treman.

A hidden gem with a deep gorge, five waterfalls, and a swimming area that gets far fewer visitors than the parks near Ithaca. The Gorge Trail runs 1.5 miles along the creek through narrow rock walls with waterfalls at several points. The Cowshed, a waterfall that flows over a rock overhang you can walk behind, is a highlight for kids. The swimming pool at the base of the glen is fed by the creek and staffed with lifeguards in summer. A replica of President Millard Fillmore birthplace cabin adds a historical touch.

The only national forest in New York State, spread across 16,000 acres of rolling terrain between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Over 30 miles of interconnected trails wind through meadows, pastures, and forest. The Interloken Trail is the signature route but shorter loops are available for families. Kids will see grazing cattle in the open pastures, which is unusual for a national forest. Blueberry picking in season is a fun bonus activity. Primitive camping is free and dispersed throughout the forest.

A unique creek-walk hike where you wade right up the streambed to reach two beautiful waterfalls hidden in a narrow gorge. There is no dry trail option so everyone gets wet feet, which kids absolutely love. The first waterfall is about a half mile in and the second is just beyond it. The creek is shallow and the rock walls on either side are layered with fossils. This is hands-down one of the most fun and memorable family hikes in the Finger Lakes. Water shoes are essential.

A hilltop recreation area with easy trails and one of the best views in the Finger Lakes region, looking out over Honeoye Lake and the surrounding hills. The trails are wide and gentle, mostly following old roads through meadows and forest. The Big Oak Trail and Fox Run Trail are both under 2 miles and great for young hikers. In winter the trails are popular for cross-country skiing. The overlook point on a clear fall day with the lake below and autumn colors everywhere is truly special.

A family-friendly state park on the shore of Keuka Lake, one of the cleanest and most beautiful Finger Lakes. The park has a sandy beach with a gradual entry perfect for young swimmers and a campground with sites nestled in the woods. The lake water is clean and warm by midsummer. Fishing is excellent from the shore and the park has a boat launch for kayaks and canoes. Hiking trails through the surrounding hills provide lake views. It is quieter and more relaxed than the bigger Finger Lakes parks.

Known as the Grand Canyon of the East with a 17-mile gorge up to 600 feet deep carved by the Genesee River with three major waterfalls. The park has 66 miles of trails but the must-do walks are the short paths to the Middle Falls and Upper Falls overlooks which are accessible even for toddlers. The 107-foot Middle Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the state. Hot air balloon rides over the gorge are available in summer and fall. The park also has a pool, cabins, campgrounds, and an inn.
