Azure Mountain Fire Tower

One of the best fire tower hikes in the Adirondacks for families. The 2-mile round trip trail climbs about 900 feet through a pleasant forest and the restored fire tower at the top gives panoramic views over the northern Adirondack wilderness. The hike is short enough for younger kids and the fire tower at the top provides the kind of dramatic payoff that makes the effort feel worthwhile. The area is less visited than the High Peaks so you may have the summit to yourselves.

Blue Mountain Trail

A 4-mile round trip hike to a fire tower at 3759 feet with incredible views over Blue Mountain Lake and the central Adirondacks. The trail is well-maintained and climbs steadily through hardwood forest. Kids love climbing the restored fire tower at the summit where the views extend in every direction across a sea of mountains and lakes. The observer cabin at the base of the tower adds a touch of history. This is one of the most rewarding fire tower hikes in the park.

Goodnow Mountain Fire Tower

A family-favorite 3.8-mile round trip hike to a restored fire tower with stunning views of the central Adirondacks. The trail is well-maintained with a steady grade that most kids can handle. Interpretive signs along the way teach about the forest ecosystem which keeps kids engaged during the climb. The fire tower at the top provides a 360-degree view including several High Peaks and the winding Rich Lake below. This is one of the best introductory fire tower hikes for families.

Hadley Mountain Fire Tower

A 3.6-mile round trip hike to a restored fire tower on Hadley Mountain with views of the Great Sacandaga Lake and the southern Adirondacks. The trail climbs about 1525 feet through forest with a few rocky sections near the top. The fire tower at the summit has been restored and is open for climbing. Views are excellent in every direction with the lake dominating the south and mountains rolling north toward the High Peaks. This is a great intermediate fire tower hike for families who have outgrown the easiest trails.

Kane Mountain Fire Tower

One of the shortest and easiest fire tower hikes in the Adirondacks making it ideal for younger kids or families new to hiking. The trail is just 0.6 miles one way with about 600 feet of elevation gain. The restored fire tower at the top gives views of Canada Lake, Pine Lake, and the surrounding southern Adirondack hills. The whole outing from car to summit and back can be done in under an hour which is perfect when you want a quick hiking win. The trail is well-maintained with no technical sections.

Overlook Mountain Trail

A 4.6-mile round trip hike up an old road to a fire tower with views over the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, and on clear days all the way to the Berkshires. Along the way, kids pass the ruins of the Overlook Mountain House hotel, a crumbling stone building that feels like discovering a castle in the woods. The fire tower at the summit is restored and climbable. The trail is wide and straightforward but climbs steadily. This hike combines history, mystery, and mountain views in a way kids love.

Poke-O-Moonshine Fire Tower Trail

A 2.4-mile round trip hike to a restored fire tower on the summit of Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain with views east to Lake Champlain and west to the High Peaks. The trail is short but gains about 1280 feet with some steep rocky sections. Kids who enjoy scrambling over rocks will have a blast on the upper section. The fire tower at the top adds extra elevation and the views are exceptional. The cliff face of the mountain is also a famous rock climbing destination visible from I-87.

Snowy Mountain Trail

The tallest mountain in the southern Adirondacks at 3899 feet with a fire tower on the summit and expansive views. The 7.4-mile round trip trail gains about 2100 feet through dense forest and is a serious hike for families with experienced young hikers. The fire tower adds elevation and the 360-degree view from the top encompasses Indian Lake, Blue Mountain, and dozens of peaks stretching to the horizon. This is often cited as one of the most rewarding hikes in the Adirondacks. A real achievement for any kid who makes it to the top.
