Delnor-Wiggins solves the problem that makes beach days with small children hard: five parking areas spread along the mile of beach mean you are always within a short carry of the car, with restrooms and showers at each. The Gulf here is typically flat and shallow. The pass at the north end has a strong current and is not for swimming, but it is a good spot to watch boats and fish, and the observation tower gives a view over the mangroves. Loggerheads nest along this beach in summer. The lot fills by mid-morning in season.

Fort Clinch is one of the best preserved nineteenth-century masonry forts in the country, and unusually you can walk almost all of it - the ramparts, the galleries, the kitchen, the bunk rooms. Rangers in period uniform staff it daily and stay in character, which children find either fascinating or unnerving. The beach below the fort is a well-known spot for finding fossilised shark teeth, especially at low tide near the jetty. Two campgrounds sit in the park, one on the Atlantic and one under a canopy of live oak and Spanish moss. The road in through the maritime forest is worth the drive on its own.

The inlet concentrates fish moving between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic, which makes the north jetty the busiest and most productive shore fishing platform in the state - snook, redfish, tarpon and Spanish mackerel all run through here. It is a real walkway with railings rather than a scramble, so children can fish it safely. On the lagoon side there is a protected shallow beach for swimming. The north side has the best surf break on the Florida east coast. Two small museums sit within the park - the McLarty Treasure Museum on the 1715 Spanish fleet wrecked off this coast, and the Sebastian Fishing Museum. A bait and tackle shop opens daily except Wednesdays. Note that bridge construction on the highway began in 2026 and can affect the campground entrance and reservations, so confirm before booking a site.

Broken Bow is two completely different fishing trips stacked on top of each other, and which one you want depends entirely on whether your kid has the patience for a fly rod or just wants to catch something. Below the dam, the Lower Mountain Fork River is one of the only year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma. Above it, Broken Bow Lake is 14,000 acres of bass, crappie and catfish. An Oklahoma state park on the shore of Hugo Lake about an hour and a half west of Broken Bow, with campsites spread along the water in more than one camping area. It is a calmer, less discovered alternative to the Beavers Bend crowds, and the swimming beach, boat ramps and fishing keep kids busy without any admission line. Sites range from primitive tent spots to RV sites with hookups. Families often use it as a first or last night on an Oklahoma road trip because it is right off Highway 70.

A large state park on Lake Wister in the foothills of the Ouachitas, with several separate camping areas along the shoreline plus cabins. The lake is big enough for real boating and fishing but the campgrounds stay reasonably quiet, and the swimming areas are shallow and kid-friendly. Because the camping areas are spread out, it is worth asking which loop suits you before booking: some sit right on the water, others are set back in the woods. It pairs naturally with the Talimena Scenic Drive an hour to the west.

Pine Creek Lake is the quieter Army Corps reservoir west of Broken Bow, ringed by several small campgrounds and boat-ramp parks. It draws a fraction of the traffic Broken Bow Lake gets, so if your family cares more about a calm swimming cove and an empty ramp than about restaurants and shops, this is the trade to make. Camping areas are basic: gravel pads, picnic tables, vault or basic restrooms, some with electric. Bring everything you need, because services around the lake are limited.

A tiny lakeside state park east of Hugo that rarely feels crowded, with shaded campsites, a swimming area and a small lake stocked for fishing. The scale is the point for families with young kids: you can see your car and the water from the same picnic table. It is roughly an hour from Broken Bow, which makes it a workable overflow option when Beavers Bend is fully booked for a holiday weekend. Amenities are simple, so stock up in Hugo or Idabel on the way in.

One of the original Oklahoma state parks and a genuine family institution, set in the sandstone bluffs and pine woods of the San Bois Mountains. Robbers Cave offers campgrounds, cabins and group camps alongside the cave itself, trout fishing in season, rappelling walls, lakes for paddling, and enough trail mileage to fill a long weekend. The mix of lodging types makes it easy to bring extended family without everyone having to camp. It sits about two hours northwest of Broken Bow and works well as the second stop on an Oklahoma loop.

A small state campground squeezed into the notch between Lake Placid and Wilmington, right along the West Branch of the Ausable River. The river is the reason to stay: it is famous fly-fishing water and the rocky banks are perfect for kids to wade and skip stones. High Falls Gorge is a couple of minutes up the road and the Whiteface toll road is barely farther. Sites are close together and traffic on Route 86 is audible, which is the trade for a location right between the two towns.

A family-friendly park east of Troy with a sandy beach on Long Pond, nature trails, and excellent fishing. The beach is lifeguard-staffed and has a gradual entry that is great for toddlers and young swimmers. Several short trails loop around the lakes through mixed forest. The park is popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. A nature center offers programs for kids during summer. The park is close to the Capital District but feels like you are in the deep woods. Kayak and canoe rentals available.

A small and peaceful campground on the St. Lawrence River near the point where Lake Ontario flows into the river. The 48 campsites are nestled among trees with several right on the waterfront. Kids love fishing from the shore and watching the constant boat traffic. The views across to Wolfe Island (Canada) are lovely. A boat launch provides access to some of the best fishing waters in the state. The park is small enough to feel intimate and quiet, a nice alternative to the busier Thousand Islands parks.

A family-friendly campground on a point jutting into the St. Lawrence River with incredible river views and stunning sunsets. The 175 campsites include waterfront options with direct river access. Kids love fishing from the shore, watching boats and ships pass, and swimming at the small beach. A boat launch and marina make it easy to explore the Thousand Islands by water. The park is close to Clayton village for dining and the Antique Boat Museum. Evening campfires with river views are hard to beat.

A 73-site campground on the St. Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay with a swimming beach, fishing docks, and a boat launch. The location puts you right in the heart of the Thousand Islands with easy access to Boldt Castle, boat tours, and village shops and restaurants. The beach is small but clean and the kids fishing from the docks catch a surprising amount of bass and pike. The campground is shaded and well-maintained. This is one of the best base camps for exploring the Thousand Islands region.

A stunning 400-acre botanical garden set against the dramatic backdrop of the Koolau Mountains. The garden is free and has wide paved roads perfect for strollers along with trails through collections of tropical plants from around the world. Kids enjoy the catch-and-release fishing lake and the visitor center has nature activities. The mountain views from inside the garden are among the most photographed on Oahu. A campground within the garden offers free weekend camping with a permit, which is one of the best-kept secrets on the island.

A family-friendly state park on the shore of Keuka Lake, one of the cleanest and most beautiful Finger Lakes. The park has a sandy beach with a gradual entry perfect for young swimmers and a campground with sites nestled in the woods. The lake water is clean and warm by midsummer. Fishing is excellent from the shore and the park has a boat launch for kayaks and canoes. Hiking trails through the surrounding hills provide lake views. It is quieter and more relaxed than the bigger Finger Lakes parks.

Kids can hike miles of shaded trails, fish in the river, paddle on Broken Bow Lake, or explore the nature center. The miniature train ride is a huge hit with little ones and the seasonal pool near the lodge is perfect for cooling off. Between the towering pines and crystal-clear water, it feels a world away from the flatlands most families drive in from.

One of the most popular fishing spots on the Mountain Fork River known for excellent bass, catfish, and rainbow trout. The accessible pier makes it easy for kids to cast a line without scrambling over rocks and the river section here runs clear and calm. Catching something is a real possibility even for total beginners. If the kids reel in a keeper take it back to the cabin and grill it for dinner. Early morning before other anglers show up is the best window.

A 525-acre gem along the South San Gabriel River with well-marked trails ranging from flat strolls to more challenging inclines through classic Hill Country terrain. Catch-and-release fishing ponds give kids a patient and rewarding activity that does not require any experience. A splash pad and modern playground anchor the central area for younger children and the expansive picnic grounds under old trees make this an ideal all-day outing.
