Grapevine

A publicly supported nonprofit sailing club on Lake Grapevine whose camps register through the City of Grapevine parks and recreation store, which is about as public as youth sailing gets in North Texas. Campers sail RS Zest dinghies, splitting each day between classroom and water time on rigging, boat parts and care, knots, right-of-way rules and boating safety. Every child passes a swim test on day one, swimming about fifty feet to a boat, boarding it, doing a capsize drill and swimming back in a life jacket. Sessions run two weeks, boat use is included, and the last day has a midday parent viewing.

An indoor water park kept at about 84 degrees year-round, which makes February and August equally irrelevant. Body slides, tube slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and a giant tipping bucket play structure cover everyone from toddlers to teens. Water park access is included with an overnight stay and this is the whole reason families book it. Beyond the water there is a MagiQuest wand game through the hotel hallways, an arcade, and a ropes course. It is not cheap but it is genuinely weatherproof and one stay usually kills two full days.

An indoor LEGO playground aimed squarely at the three-to-ten crowd, with build zones, two small rides, a 4D cinema and a MINILAND model of DFW landmarks made from millions of bricks. Kids can spend an unreasonable amount of time at the race car build-and-test ramps. There is a soft play structure for burning off energy and a dedicated Duplo area for toddlers. Adults are generally not admitted without a child, so this is a kids-first venue by design. Buy timed tickets online because walk-up pricing is higher and slots sell out on rainy weekends.

A compact mall aquarium built almost entirely around what small kids like: eye-level tanks, touch pools with sea stars, and a curved underwater tunnel with rays and sharks gliding overhead. The whole route takes about an hour which is exactly right for preschoolers. Interactive quiz stations along the way keep older siblings from getting bored. Because it is inside Grapevine Mills you get food court, restrooms and a dry walk from the parking lot, which matters when the weather is the reason you came. Book online ahead of holiday weekends.

A network of easy lakeside trails on the south side of Grapevine Lake that are perfect for families who want a scenic walk without a difficult workout. The packed dirt paths wind through open meadows and wooded areas with constant lake views. Kids enjoy spotting great blue herons on the shoreline and the trails connect to Oak Grove Park with picnic shelters and a playground.

One of only two roped-off swim zones on Lake Grapevine, with a gently sloping sandy beach that makes it easy for little ones to wade in at their own pace. A big colorful playground sits right next to the beach so kids can bounce between sand and slides all day long. Lakefront camping is available for families who want to extend the fun overnight, and the picnic areas have grills and covered shelters for cooking out.
