The state museum of Hawaiian history and natural science, and the first thing to reach for when a beach day on Oahu gets rained out. Hawaiian Hall is three koa-wood galleries of chiefly regalia, feather capes and a whale hanging from the ceiling. The Science Adventure Center has a walk-through volcano with a lava-flow demonstration that erupts on a schedule and genuinely startles kids. There is a planetarium running Polynesian wayfinding shows about how navigators crossed the Pacific by stars. Plan three hours and check the daily schedule of hula and science demonstrations on arrival.

Hilo gets more rain than almost anywhere in the United States, which makes this the most useful building on the east side of the Big Island. The center pairs Mauna Kea astronomy with Hawaiian voyaging traditions, so exhibits move between telescope science and how Polynesians navigated by stars and swells. A full-dome planetarium runs several shows a day including some presented in Hawaiian. Hands-on stations cover volcanoes, star formation and wayfinding. Three hours easily, and the planetarium alone justifies the trip.

The only royal palace on American soil, home of Hawaiis last monarchs and a genuinely moving place to bring older kids. Guided and audio tours take you through the throne room, the grand staircase and the upstairs room where Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned after the overthrow. The palace had electric light and telephones before the White House did, which is the detail kids remember. Everyone wears booties over their shoes to protect the koa floors. Tours run on a schedule so book ahead, and note it is not a place for restless toddlers.

A small two-building museum in Lihue covering the natural and cultural history of Kauai and Niihau, from the islands volcanic formation to the sugar plantation era. Kids respond to the koa wood canoes, feather work, and the shell lei from Niihau. A relief map of the island helps explain why the interior is impassable and why the Napali coast looks like that. It is genuinely small, about an hour, which makes it a reasonable stop when a Kauai downpour parks itself over the island. Gift shop has good local crafts.
