The most popular Adirondack High Peak with stunning 360-degree summit views

The most popular of the Adirondack High Peaks and a rite of passage for families with older kids. The 4.8-mile round trip trail climbs 1940 feet to a bald summit with a 360-degree view that will take your breath away. The trail is well-worn and straightforward but it is steep in sections and requires good footwear. Kids who reach the top earn serious bragging rights. On a clear day the views stretch across the High Peaks wilderness to Lake Champlain and Vermont.

Quick family hike with a big High Peaks view just outside Lake Placid village

A quick 0.6-mile hike just outside Lake Placid village that packs a surprisingly big view into a tiny package. The trail is short and manageable for even very young hikers. At the top, an open rock ledge provides a front-row seat to the High Peaks skyline. This is the perfect after-lunch hike when you have an hour to kill and want to give kids a taste of mountain hiking without the commitment of a longer trail.

The beach is small but beautiful and the water is clean and refreshing. Kids can swim, build sandcastles, and paddle while looking up at some of the tallest mountains in New York. The Loj also offers programs for families and serves as the trailhead for numerous High Peaks hikes. Spending a morning at the beach before an afternoon hike on Mount Jo makes for a perfect Adirondack day.

Epic hike past a 150-foot waterfall to the iconic Ausable Lakes cliff-top view

A stunning 10-mile round trip hike that takes you past Rainbow Falls, a towering 150-foot cascade, and up to the Indian Head cliff with one of the most famous views in the Adirondacks. The cliff-top view looks straight down the Ausable Lakes valley flanked by High Peaks on both sides. This is a long and moderately challenging day for families with strong older hikers but the combination of a massive waterfall and a world-class view makes it one of the most rewarding hikes in the park. Start early and pack plenty of food.

A short but rewarding 2.6-mile round trip hike right behind the Adirondack Loj that delivers a High Peaks view typically reserved for much longer climbs. The trail offers two routes to the summit: a short steep scramble and a longer gradual path, so families can choose based on their kids abilities. The top looks out over Heart Lake with the High Peaks rising behind it. This is one of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in the Adirondacks for families and a perfect introduction to mountain hiking.

Drive to the summit of the fifth highest peak in New York for breathtaking views

Drive almost to the top of the fifth highest peak in New York State on this scenic toll road. At the top, a tunnel and elevator carved through the rock bring you to the actual summit at 4867 feet. On clear days you can see all the way to Montreal. Kids are amazed by the tunnel and the views from the summit are unlike anything else in the Adirondacks. The road itself has several pull-offs with outstanding views. A small castle-like building at the summit houses exhibits about the mountain.
