McKinney Roughs Nature Park

Over 1,100 acres of diverse terrain along the Colorado River managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority with 18 miles of trails through pine forests and river bottoms. The park offers guided horseback rides that kids love and the riverside trails have several spots where families can wade into the Colorado. Regular nature programs include nighttime owl prowls and survival skills workshops that older kids find genuinely engaging.

Mission Tejas State Park

A peaceful East Texas park centered around a replica of the first Spanish mission in the region giving kids a tangible connection to early Texas history. The trails wind through towering hardwood forest and the CCC-built log cabin serves as a fascinating visitor center. Fall color in the surrounding Davy Crockett National Forest is some of the best in Texas. It is small and uncrowded which makes it perfect for families who want a quiet weekend in the woods.

Mother Neff State Park

The first official Texas state park with a beautifully renovated campground and trails that wind through the Leon River bottomland. The Wash Pond Trail leads to a natural limestone sinkhole pool that kids find fascinating. CCC-era stone structures throughout the park give it a historic atmosphere. It is a compact and manageable park that works well for families with younger kids on their first camping trip.

Palmetto State Park

Named for the tropical dwarf palmetto palms that give this park an unexpected jungle-like atmosphere along the San Marcos River. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

The second-largest canyon in the United States after the Grand Canyon and one of the most visually stunning landscapes in all of Texas. The Lighthouse Trail is the signature hike leading to an iconic 310-foot rock spire that makes for an incredible family photo. The drive down into the canyon itself is thrilling for kids as the walls rise hundreds of feet on either side. Summer brings the outdoor musical drama TEXAS performed in the canyon amphitheater.

Pedernales Falls State Park

The tilted limestone slabs of the Pedernales River falls create a landscape that looks like another planet and kids are mesmerized by the rushing water carving through layered rock. A designated swimming area downstream offers safe wading and splashing when water levels cooperate. Over 10 miles of trails wind through Hill Country terrain and the bird creek trail is excellent for wildlife viewing.

Phil Hardberger Park

A 330-acre urban park in San Antonio connected by a stunning land bridge that lets wildlife cross safely over a busy road and gives families a unique elevated walking experience. The nature playscape is one of the best in the state with climbing structures made from natural materials and a sand and water play area. Over eight miles of trails wind through restored savanna and woodland and the Urban Ecology Center has live animal displays.

Possum Kingdom State Park

Built on the dramatic cliffs above the clear blue waters of Possum Kingdom Lake in the Palo Pinto Mountains. The water here is unusually clear for Texas and kids can snorkel and spot fish in the shallows. The park has a swim area with a rocky beach and the Longhorn Trail offers moderate hiking with canyon views.

Reimers Ranch Park

A 2,400-acre Travis County park that is the premier outdoor rock climbing destination in Central Texas with hundreds of established routes on limestone cliffs ranging from beginner to expert. The park also has over 18 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails and the Pedernales River runs along the southern boundary with swimming access when water levels allow.

Rowlett Creek Preserve

A 524-acre nature preserve with over five miles of dirt trails winding through bottomland forest along Rowlett Creek. San Angelo State Park

A 7,677-acre park on the shores of O.C. Fisher Reservoir with over 50 miles of trails through mesquite grassland and rocky terrain. The park maintains a small herd of Texas longhorn cattle that kids love seeing up close. An official state longhorn herd interpretive trail educates families about the breed’s history. Mountain biking is popular on the rugged trails and the park offers equestrian camping for horse-owning families.

Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site

Home to some of the oldest known pictographs in North America in the Fate Bell Shelter which is accessible only by guided tour. Kids who are into ancient history and archaeology will be absolutely captivated seeing 4,000-year-old rock paintings in their original setting deep in a limestone canyon. The canyon rim trail offers dramatic views of the Rio Grande and Pecos River confluence. This is a remote park that rewards families willing to make the drive.

Southwest Nature Preserve

A 58-acre urban nature preserve with three miles of trails through forest and tallgrass prairie right in the heart of Arlington. The Loop Trail is short enough for younger kids and leads to a scenic overlook above a small lake. It is one of the quieter preserves in the metroplex and rarely feels crowded even on weekends.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

A 227-acre preserve on the western edge of Austin with 2.5 miles of well-maintained trails through juniper and oak woodland. The waterfall at the end of the main trail is a rewarding turnaround point for kids and the preserve runs excellent nature education programs for school-age children. It is one of the quieter hiking spots in Austin and rarely feels crowded.

Cedar Hill State Park

Sitting right on Joe Pool Lake barely 20 minutes from downtown Dallas, this park feels way more remote than it actually is. Kids can swim, fish from the shore, or watch for wildlife on the Talala Trail loop. The DORBA mountain bike trails are a blast for older kids ready to ride dirt, and the 350 campsites make it one of the easiest places to plan an overnight camping trip close to the city.

Cedar Ridge Preserve

A surprisingly rugged 600-acre preserve tucked into the southwest corner of Dallas where kids can explore nine miles of trails through rocky terrain and dense forest. Cleburne State Park

Sitting on the northern edge of the Hill Country just 30 minutes southwest of Fort Worth, this park feels like an escape without the long road trip. The spring-fed lake is no-wake, so kids can swim, kayak, and canoe without dodging powerboats. Nearly 13 miles of trails wind through rolling terrain, and every campsite has electric hookups, which makes family camping significantly more comfortable. A small park store sells firewood, ice, and basic supplies.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

This is the place where your kids can literally stand in real dinosaur footprints preserved in a shallow riverbed. The Paluxy River tracks are jaw-dropping for kids of all ages, and during warmer months the river itself is shallow enough for wading and splashing. Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center

A peaceful 200-acre preserve with three miles of shaded trails winding through one of the most ecologically diverse canyons in North Texas. Kids gravitate to the unstructured nature play area where they can build with sticks, dig in dirt, and just be wild. The indoor Canyon View area lets families watch birds feeding right outside the windows, which is a reliable way to keep younger kids entertained on hot or rainy days. Guided day and night hikes are offered seasonally.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

A massive 12,000-acre wildlife refuge on the shores of Lake Texoma that is a must-visit for families with bird-curious kids. Over 316 bird species have been recorded, and the monthly Refuge ROCKS program is designed specifically for children ages 4 to 12 with hands-on nature activities. A two-mile auto tour lets families spot wildlife from the comfort of the car, which is a lifesaver with very young passengers. Nine miles of trails offer easy to moderate hiking with lake views.
