Consistently ranked among the best childrens museums in the country and it earns it. Kidtropolis is a whole kid-run city with a bank, a vet clinic and a grocery store where children take jobs and spend their own currency. FlowWorks is a giant water play zone, and the Invention Convention lets kids build and test contraptions with real materials. There is a separate Tot Spot for the under-threes. Thursday evenings are free family nights and they get very busy, so weigh crowds against cost.

Part aquarium, part small amusement park, which is either a bonus or a hazard depending on your kids. The Adventure Exhibit runs through themed zones including a sunken temple, a Louisiana swamp with alligators, and a shark tunnel. White tigers live in a large indoor habitat that surprises everyone the first time. Outside there is a small train, a Ferris wheel and a carousel, plus a restaurant with a huge central tank. Rides are individually priced on top of aquarium admission so decide the budget before you walk in.

One of the great natural history museums in the US and a full day if you let it be. The Morian Hall of Paleontology mounts its dinosaur skeletons mid-action rather than standing still, which changes how kids react to them. The Cockrell Butterfly Center is a three-story glass rainforest where butterflies land on you. Add the Burke Baker Planetarium, a giant-screen theater, a gems and minerals hall that genuinely dazzles, and an Egypt hall with real mummies. Several attractions are ticketed on top of general admission, so plan which ones you actually want.

The visitor center for NASA Johnson Space Center and the closest most kids will get to standing inside the real thing. Tram tours run out across the working campus, and understanding how they are sold matters more than anything else here. General admission includes the standard routes - the Astronaut Training Facility, where hardware for current missions is genuinely being worked on, Rocket Park with its Saturn V, and the NASA campus tour - but they run subject to availability on first-come boarding passes you collect from Guest Services on arrival, not online. The Historic Mission Control tour is a separate ticket on top of admission, so if that is the thing your family came for, book it deliberately. Independence Plaza lets you walk through a shuttle replica mounted on a genuine 747 carrier aircraft, and indoors there are moon rocks you can touch and Apollo-era capsules.

A museum about the human body that is much less clinical than it sounds. The Amazing Body Pavilion walks you through a giant heart, a set of oversized organs, and a brain you can climb into, with sound and light effects the whole way. Kids see real preserved specimens, test their balance and reflexes, and try out surgical tools in a simulated operating room. It is smaller than the natural science museum across the park, which makes it a good second stop or a lower-stakes option with younger kids. Sits right in the Museum District so it pairs well with the childrens museum.

A beautifully renovated 160-acre urban park stretching along Buffalo Bayou with wide paved trails perfect for family biking and an incredible destination playground with climbing nets and hillside slides. Kayak and bike rentals are available on-site and the park runs a popular free bat viewing program at the Waugh Drive bridge where thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at sunset. The Johnny Steele Dog Park is one of the best in Texas.

A surprisingly wild 2,800-acre park on the east side of Houston built around a 1,200-acre reservoir that is a magnet for wading birds and alligators. The pond dipping station and hands-on nature exhibits inside the learning center are designed specifically for kids. An observation tower gives panoramic views over the wetlands and the fishing ponds are stocked and free to use.
