A small, warm childrens museum a block off Broadway aimed squarely at the under-eights. Kids run a pretend diner, drive a fire truck, work a grocery checkout and build in a construction zone. There is a dedicated toddler area for crawlers and new walkers away from the bigger kids. It is genuinely small, so think ninety minutes rather than a whole day, but it is exactly the right size for a winter morning when everyone is climbing the walls. Downtown Saratoga is right outside for lunch afterwards.

Consistently ranked among the best childrens museums in the country and it earns it. Kidtropolis is a whole kid-run city with a bank, a vet clinic and a grocery store where children take jobs and spend their own currency. FlowWorks is a giant water play zone, and the Invention Convention lets kids build and test contraptions with real materials. There is a separate Tot Spot for the under-threes. Thursday evenings are free family nights and they get very busy, so weigh crowds against cost.

Two floors of art-making stations where kids name and wrap their own crayon, spin melted wax into art, and turn a selfie into a coloring page. There are more than twenty attractions and almost all of them end with something your kid takes home. A soft play area and a toddler zone cover the under-fours. It is loud, bright and unapologetically commercial, and small kids absolutely love it. Bring a bag for the pile of paper and crayons you will be leaving with.

Tulsas childrens museum in a purpose-built building beside the Arkansas River, with multiple floors of hands-on play. Kids build in a maker space with real tools, run water through channels and dams, climb a multi-story structure and put on shows in a performance area. A separate space serves crawlers and toddlers. It sits next to Gathering Place so a wet morning indoors can turn into an afternoon at the playground when the sky clears. Two to three hours for the under-tens.

Four floors of play built around Buffalo and western New York themes, sitting right at Canalside downtown. Kids move water through a scale model of the Erie Canal with locks that actually work, run a mini Wegmans-style grocery, and climb a multi-story tower structure in the atrium. There is a dedicated space for babies and toddlers away from the bigger kids. Winter is peak season here because Canalside outside is frozen solid. Two to three hours and a very happy under-eight.

Kids run a mini television studio, work in a pretend supermarket and fire station, and explore Fantastic You where they walk through an oversized model of the human body. Rainbow World covers cultures across the Pacific with costumes and homes kids can go inside. It is aimed squarely at the under-tens and is the best wet-weather option on the island for that age. Two to three hours and a short drive from Waikiki.

Kids can spend an unreasonable amount of time at the race car build-and-test ramps. There is a soft play structure for burning off energy and a dedicated Duplo area for toddlers. Adults are generally not admitted without a child, so this is a kids-first venue by design. Buy timed tickets online because walk-up pricing is higher and slots sell out on rainy weekends.

A hands-on childrens museum on the Poughkeepsie waterfront with about sixty exhibits packed into a manageable space. Kids build circuits, work a bubble station, climb through a play structure and mess with water tables and simple machines. Because it sits by the river you can walk out onto the Walkway Over the Hudson approach afterwards when the weather clears. It is not huge, so plan two hours rather than a day. The best indoor option in the mid-Hudson Valley for the under-tens.

A walk through the entire history of video games from Pong to modern consoles, with a huge amount of it playable rather than behind glass. The recreated 1980s arcade is set to free play so kids can hammer the cabinets without feeding quarters. A living-room setup from each decade lets parents show kids exactly what they grew up on, which is the real draw here for millennial families. There is a giant playable Pong and a wall of consoles in chronological order. Older kids and teens who normally hate museums genuinely like this one.

A hands-on science museum in Ithaca with well over a hundred exhibits and a strong reputation among upstate families. Kids operate a walk-in kaleidoscope, launch things across the room, work a two-story ball machine and handle animals in the live animal room. The Curiosity Corner is a soft, quiet space for the under-fives. An outdoor science playground and the Sagan Planet Walk extend things when the weather is decent. Kids climb a multi-story sensory structure, run a mock vet clinic and grocery, program small robots, and build circuits that actually light up. The Little Town area is scaled for toddlers with a market, a stage and a construction zone. Outdoor water play and a musical garden extend the visit on dry days. Two to four hours depending on how many times your kid loops back to the water tables.

The best indoor family destination in upstate New York, full stop, and worth a drive from anywhere in the state. It is enormous: a walk-through Sesame Street set, a full arcade with classic cabinets, a butterfly garden, a working carousel, a Berenstain Bears house and the National Toy Hall of Fame. The 2023 expansion added a whole neighbourhood of new play worlds and an indoor skyline bridge. Older kids and teens stay engaged through the video game history halls while toddlers have their own zones. Budget a full day and expect to still miss things.

Austins childrens museum and the default answer when the weather ruins a Barton Springs plan. Everything is designed to be pulled, poured, built or knocked over, with a huge water play area, a light and shadow lab, and a maker studio with real tools. There is a separate space for babies and crawlers so the under-twos are not steamrolled by big kids. Outdoor backyard play space extends the visit on nice days. Two to three hours is realistic and there is a cafe on site when everyone crashes.

An indoor science-and-play attraction inside the Destiny USA mall, built around illusion rooms and physical challenges rather than quiet exhibits. Kids lie on a bed of nails, ride a bubble-wall, experience a hurricane simulator and try an anti-gravity chamber. A ropes course and laser tag are usually included or available as add-ons. It is loud and gimmicky in the best way and burns a lot of energy on a snow day. Being inside a mall means food, restrooms and a dry walk from the car are all sorted.
