Camp Santanoni Historic Area

A 9.8-mile round trip hike (or bike ride) on a wide old carriage road through beautiful forest to a sprawling Great Camp on the shore of Newcomb Lake. The flat terrain makes it easier than the distance suggests and many families bring bikes to cut the time in half. At the end, the historic camp buildings sit on a stunning lakeside setting that feels like a secret Adirondack world. Kids can explore the old buildings and swim in the lake before heading back. This is a genuinely unique family adventure.

Cascade Lake Trail

A flat and scenic 4-mile loop around Cascade Lake with lean-tos, swimming spots, and a quiet forest setting. The trail is gentle enough for younger kids and provides several opportunities to stop at the lakeshore to skip rocks, wade, or have a snack. The lean-tos make great picnic shelters on rainy days. Combined with the nearby Moss Lake trail, families can easily fill a full day of exploring. The lake is popular with loons so keep your eyes and ears open.

Cherry Plain State Park

A quiet state park in the Rensselaer Plateau with a beautiful swimming beach on Black River Pond. The beach is sandy, lifeguard-staffed, and surrounded by forest. Short hiking trails loop through the woods and the park is popular for fishing. The campground is small with only 10 sites making it one of the most intimate camping experiences in the state park system. The park is off the beaten path and rarely crowded, which is exactly its appeal. A great low-key family day trip from the Albany area.

Clarence Fahnestock State Park

A large Hudson Highlands park with a swimming beach on Canopus Lake, over 50 miles of trails, and a campground. The beach is family-friendly with a sandy shore and lifeguards. The Appalachian Trail runs through the park and shorter nature loops are available for younger kids. The park encompasses 14000 acres of forests, ponds, and streams with excellent birding and wildlife viewing. Canopus Lake also has boat rentals. It is a perfect weekend destination that combines swimming, hiking, and camping.

Clark Reservation State Park

A unique geological park with a glacial plunge basin lake surrounded by 175-foot cliffs. Glacier Lake at the bottom of the basin is a deep green meromictic lake. Trails wind along the rim and down to the lake shore with views into the rocky basin. The geology here is fascinating and interpretive signs explain how glaciers carved the landscape. The park is small but packs a lot of natural drama into a compact area. Rock climbing is popular on the cliff faces. A great short nature outing near Syracuse.

Cranberry Lake Campground

A state campground on the shore of Cranberry Lake, one of the largest and most remote lakes in the Adirondacks. The 173 sites are wooded and many have direct lake access. The swimming beach is sandy and the lake is clean and wild. Kayaking and canoeing are excellent with miles of shoreline and islands to explore. The Cranberry Lake 50 trail circles the entire lake for ambitious hikers. The campground has a quieter, more remote feel than the busier Adirondack campgrounds to the east. Loon calls echo across the lake every evening.

Delta Lake State Park

A state park on Delta Lake with one of the best swimming beaches in central New York. The 900-foot sandy beach has a gradual entry and lifeguards on duty during summer. The lake is warm and calm, perfect for young swimmers. The park has a 101-site campground and a large picnic area with shelters. Fishing is good from the shore and boat rentals are available. It is a straightforward, no-frills family park that does the basics really well. The beach alone is worth the trip on a hot day.

Eighth Lake Campground

A beautiful state campground on the Fulton Chain of Lakes with 126 sites, many directly on the lakefront. The sandy beach is perfect for swimming and the calm lake is ideal for canoeing and kayaking with kids. The campground connects to the Fulton Chain portage trail and sits right on Route 28 for easy access to Old Forge attractions. Sites are well-spaced and shaded by tall pines. The combination of waterfront camping, good swimming, and nearby activities makes this one of the best family campgrounds in the Adirondacks.

Fish Creek Pond Campground

One of the largest and most popular campgrounds in the Adirondacks with 355 sites spread along the shores of Fish Creek Pond and connecting waterways. The campground is a paddlers paradise with direct water access to a chain of ponds and lakes. The beach is sandy with a lifeguard and the water is warm by midsummer. Floodwood Pond

A network of small interconnected ponds accessible by short portages that is perfect for family paddling adventures. The ponds are motor-free and surrounded by pristine Adirondack forest. Kids love the sense of discovery paddling from one pond to the next through narrow channels and short carries. The water is calm and clear and wildlife sightings including loons, herons, and beavers are common. Grafton Lakes State Park

A family-friendly park east of Troy with a sandy beach on Long Pond, nature trails, and excellent fishing. The beach is lifeguard-staffed and has a gradual entry that is great for toddlers and young swimmers. Several short trails loop around the lakes through mixed forest. The park is popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. A nature center offers programs for kids during summer. Green Lakes State Park

Two stunning glacial lakes with impossibly blue-green water that looks like the Caribbean set in the woods of central New York. Green Lake and Round Lake are meromictic, meaning their layers never mix, which gives them their striking color. The beach on Green Lake has lifeguards and the water is refreshing on hot days. A 3-mile trail loops around Green Lake through beautiful forest. The park also has an 18-hole golf course, playground, and campground. The lake color alone makes this worth the visit.

Hadley Mountain Fire Tower

A 3.6-mile round trip hike to a restored fire tower on Hadley Mountain with views of the Great Sacandaga Lake and the southern Adirondacks. The trail climbs about 1525 feet through forest with a few rocky sections near the top. The fire tower at the summit has been restored and is open for climbing. Views are excellent in every direction with the lake dominating the south and mountains rolling north toward the High Peaks. This is a great intermediate fire tower hike for families who have outgrown the easiest trails.

Harriman State Park

The second largest state park in New York with over 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes and reservoirs, and two swimming beaches. The park is massive and offers everything from easy lakeside strolls to challenging mountain hikes. Lake Sebago and Lake Welch have lifeguard-staffed beaches perfect for families. The trails range from flat lakeshore walks to rocky ridgeline scrambles with Hudson Valley views. It is an incredible outdoor playground close to New York City and a great place to introduce kids to serious hiking.

Heart Lake

A crystal-clear mountain lake at the Adirondack Loj with a sandy beach, canoe rentals, and the High Peaks rising dramatically behind it. Hearthstone Point Campground

One of the most popular state campgrounds in the Adirondacks right on the shore of Lake George. The 251 sites are shaded by tall pines and many sit directly on the waterfront. Indian Lake Islands Campground

Paddle to your own island campsite on Indian Lake for a family camping adventure that feels like true wilderness. The DEC maintains 55 island and shoreline campsites accessible only by boat. Kids love the excitement of paddling to their campsite and having an island all to themselves. Indian Lake is large and scenic with mountain views from the water. The campsites have fire rings and pit toilets. The town of Indian Lake is nearby for supplies. This is a more accessible alternative to the Saranac Lake Islands with similar magic.

Kenneth L. Wilson Campground

A well-maintained Catskills campground with 76 sites surrounding a beautiful 25-acre lake with a sandy beach. The swimming area is perfect for kids and canoe and kayak rentals are available. Sites are well-spaced and shaded. The campground is centrally located for day trips to Kaaterskill Falls, Slide Mountain, and Woodstock. The combination of lakeside camping, good swimming, and easy access to top Catskill trails makes this one of the best family base camps in the region.

Keuka Lake State Park

A family-friendly state park on the shore of Keuka Lake, one of the cleanest and most beautiful Finger Lakes. A scenic state campground on the shore of Lake Durant in the central Adirondacks with 60 tent and trailer sites, many with direct lake access.
