A protected natural area on Maui south shore with excellent snorkeling in calm, clear water over lava rock reef. The reserve sits on the last lava flow on Maui and the underwater landscape of lava formations covered in coral is fascinating. Fish, turtles, and eels are common. The entry is over lava rock so water shoes are essential. There are no facilities and no lifeguards so this is for families comfortable with independent ocean swimming. The marine life here is abundant because the area is well protected.

Ali i Kula Lavender Farm

Baby Beach Lahaina

A shallow protected beach on the north end of Lahaina that is perfect for toddlers and young children. A natural reef creates a wading pool that rarely gets deeper than two feet, so parents can relax while little ones splash safely. The sandy bottom is smooth and the water is warm and calm. Older kids will find it too shallow but for babies and toddlers this is the ideal beach. Shade trees along the shore provide relief from the sun. The beach is small and local so you will feel like you found a secret spot.

Big Beach (Makena State Park)

A massive golden sand beach that stretches for a third of a mile with some of the most beautiful turquoise water on Maui. The beach is wide and uncrowded with a dramatic cinder cone at one end. The shore break can be powerful so this beach is better for older kids who are strong swimmers. Bodyboarding here is excellent when the waves are right. The sand is incredibly soft and the overall beauty of the setting is stunning. Sunset here is a show. Little Beach, over the hill, is more protected for younger kids but can be clothing-optional.

Camp Olowalu

The reef off Olowalu is one of the best snorkeling spots on Maui with a high chance of seeing sea turtles. Kids fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up to snorkel right from camp. A short walk across a windswept point to a formation of sharp, jagged lava rock teeth jutting upward from the coastline that looks like a dragon rising from the earth. A beautifully maintained 26-acre botanical garden along the Road to Hana with ocean views, rare tropical plants, and the lookout platform where the iconic Jurassic Park scene was filmed. Watching the sunrise from the 10023-foot summit of Haleakala volcano is one of the most extraordinary experiences in Hawaii. The crater landscape looks like Mars and the sunrise above the clouds is genuinely life-changing. Kids are awed by the alien-looking terrain and the cinder cones inside the massive crater. It is very cold at the summit (often below freezing at dawn) so bundle up. Sunrise reservations are required and sell out months in advance. A gorgeous 3-mile stretch of golden sand on Maui west side that is consistently rated among the best beaches in the world. The water is calm and clear making it excellent for swimming and snorkeling. Black Rock at the north end is one of the best shore snorkeling spots on Maui with sea turtles and tropical fish. Every evening at sunset a cliff diving ceremony from Black Rock draws a crowd. The beachfront walk connects hotels, restaurants, and shops. Snorkel gear can be rented at multiple spots along the beach.

Kapalua Coastal Trail

A stunning 3.5-mile coastal boardwalk and trail connecting several beautiful bays along Maui west shore. The trail is mostly flat and paved with sections of boardwalk over lava rock. Kapalua Bay at one end and DT Fleming Beach at the other are both excellent for families. This is one of the most scenic easy walks in all of Hawaii.

A natural blowhole on the rugged northwest coast of Maui that shoots ocean water up to 100 feet in the air when the surf is up. A small, sheltered crescent beach in Wailea that offers some of the easiest and best snorkeling on Maui south shore. The reef starts just offshore and the water is clear and calm most of the year. Sea turtles are frequently spotted grazing on the rocks to the right side of the beach. The beach has restrooms, showers, and a grassy area for picnics. It is less crowded than nearby Wailea Beach and the snorkeling is better. The sandy entry makes it comfortable for kids. A perfect morning snorkeling spot before exploring the rest of the Wailea Beach Path.
