One of the best fire tower hikes in the Adirondacks for families. The 2-mile round trip trail climbs about 900 feet through a pleasant forest and the restored fire tower at the top gives panoramic views over the northern Adirondack wilderness. The hike is short enough for younger kids and the fire tower at the top provides the kind of dramatic payoff that makes the effort feel worthwhile. The area is less visited than the High Peaks so you may have the summit to yourselves.

A moderate 2.4-mile round trip hike near Keene that delivers outstanding views of the High Peaks for relatively little effort. The trail gains about 750 feet through mixed forest and opens up to exposed rock ledges near the summit. Kids enjoy the rocky scrambles near the top and the views of Giant Mountain, the Great Range, and Hurricane Mountain make it feel like you are deep in the wilderness even though the trailhead is right off Route 9N.

A 4-mile round trip hike to a fire tower at 3759 feet with incredible views over Blue Mountain Lake and the central Adirondacks. The trail is well-maintained and climbs steadily through hardwood forest. The observer cabin at the base of the tower adds a touch of history. This is one of the most rewarding fire tower hikes in the park.

A popular 6.6-mile round trip hike to a 2334-foot summit with sweeping views of Lake George and the surrounding mountains. The trail gains about 2000 feet of elevation so it is a real workout and best suited for families with older kids who enjoy a challenge. The summit has wide open rock slabs perfect for spreading out a snack. On a clear day you can see all the way to Vermont. This is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Lake George region.

A 3.6-mile round trip hike to a restored fire tower on Hadley Mountain with views of the Great Sacandaga Lake and the southern Adirondacks. The trail climbs about 1525 feet through forest with a few rocky sections near the top. The fire tower at the summit has been restored and is open for climbing. Views are excellent in every direction with the lake dominating the south and mountains rolling north toward the High Peaks. This is a great intermediate fire tower hike for families who have outgrown the easiest trails.

A stunning 10-mile round trip hike that takes you past Rainbow Falls, a towering 150-foot cascade, and up to the Indian Head cliff with one of the most famous views in the Adirondacks. The cliff-top view looks straight down the Ausable Lakes valley flanked by High Peaks on both sides. This is a long and moderately challenging day for families with strong older hikers but the combination of a massive waterfall and a world-class view makes it one of the most rewarding hikes in the park. Start early and pack plenty of food.

One of the shortest and easiest fire tower hikes in the Adirondacks making it ideal for younger kids or families new to hiking. The trail is just 0.6 miles one way with about 600 feet of elevation gain. The restored fire tower at the top gives views of Canada Lake, Pine Lake, and the surrounding southern Adirondack hills. The whole outing from car to summit and back can be done in under an hour which is perfect when you want a quick hiking win. The trail is well-maintained with no technical sections.

Koke'e State Park

A highland park above Waimea Canyon with over 45 miles of trails through native forest, mountain meadows, and dramatic cliff-top viewpoints. The Kalalau Lookout at 4000 feet provides a view down into the Na Pali Coast valley that is one of the most photographed scenes in Hawaii. The Nature Trail near the museum is a flat 0.1-mile loop perfect for little ones. The Pihea Trail and Alaka i Swamp Trail offer more ambitious hikes through a primordial cloud forest. The Kokee Museum has exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the area.

Camp in a mountain forest at 3600 feet elevation above Waimea Canyon on Kauai with cool temperatures that feel nothing like the beach below. The campground has tent sites and rustic cabins set in a native forest filled with birdsong. The cooler climate is a refreshing change and kids need jackets which feels exotic in Hawaii. From camp you can hike to Waimea Canyon lookouts and Na Pali Coast viewpoints. The nene (Hawaiian goose) is commonly seen in the park. Stars at night are incredible with minimal light pollution.

Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station

The visitor station at 9200 feet on Mauna Kea offers free stargazing programs with telescopes every evening and sits above the cloud line for some of the best stargazing in the world. The evening program is family-friendly and guides point out planets, galaxies, and constellations through multiple telescopes. The Milky Way from here is so vivid it does not look real. The drive up passes through multiple climate zones from tropical to subarctic which fascinates kids. Children under 13 should not go to the summit (13796 feet) due to altitude.

A short but rewarding 2.6-mile round trip hike right behind the Adirondack Loj that delivers a High Peaks view typically reserved for much longer climbs. The trail offers two routes to the summit: a short steep scramble and a longer gradual path, so families can choose based on their kids abilities. The top looks out over Heart Lake with the High Peaks rising behind it. This is one of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in the Adirondacks for families and a perfect introduction to mountain hiking.

A mountain forest on the slopes of Haleakala at 6200 feet that feels nothing like tropical Hawaii. Towering redwood, eucalyptus, and pine trees create a cool, misty forest that could be in the Pacific Northwest. The Redwood Trail and Plum Trail are family-friendly loops through these unusual forests. The temperature is 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the coast which surprises kids who expect Hawaii to always be hot. On clear days the views of Maui central valley and the ocean are spectacular. Drive or hike to the 2030-foot summit for jaw-dropping panoramic views of Lake George, the Adirondacks, and the Green Mountains of Vermont. The scenic toll road gets you most of the way up and a short shuttle ride or 0.6-mile walk reaches the top. Kids love running around the summit area and picking out landmarks below. The hiking trail from the base is 3.2 miles and a solid workout for older kids. Either way, the views from the top are absolutely worth it.

The most popular route from the Slide Mountain parking area is about 5.6 miles round trip with a 1700-foot elevation gain through beautiful boreal forest. The summit is wooded but a viewpoint near the top gives sweeping views south. Reaching the top is a real accomplishment and a great milestone for kids building toward bigger mountains. The 7.4-mile round trip trail gains about 2100 feet through dense forest and is a serious hike for families with experienced young hikers. Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway

Drive almost to the top of the fifth highest peak in New York State on this scenic toll road. At the top, a tunnel and elevator carved through the rock bring you to the actual summit at 4867 feet. On clear days you can see all the way to Montreal. Kids are amazed by the tunnel and the views from the summit are unlike anything else in the Adirondacks. The road itself has several pull-offs with outstanding views. A small castle-like building at the summit houses exhibits about the mountain.
