Summer has the calmest conditions.

A natural blowhole on the rugged northwest coast of Maui that shoots ocean water up to 100 feet in the air when the surf is up. The short hike down from the road (about 0.6 miles) crosses rocky lava terrain to a dramatic coastline. Kids are thrilled by the eruptions of water from the blowhole. The surrounding lava formations and tide pools are fascinating. Stay well back from the blowhole and cliff edges as it is genuinely dangerous up close. The heart-shaped rock formation nearby is another fun find for kids.

Learning to surf in Hawaii is a bucket-list family experience and the North Shore in summer has perfect beginner waves. Multiple certified surf schools operate out of Haleiwa Beach Park with patient instructors who get kids standing on their first lesson. The summer waves are small and gentle, nothing like the giant winter swells the North Shore is famous for. Most kids are riding waves within the first hour and the pride on their faces is priceless. Group lessons are the best value and typically last 2 hours.

One of the best shore-access snorkeling spots on Maui with a massive coral reef that extends far offshore in shallow calm water. Green sea turtles are almost guaranteed here and the reef is teeming with tropical fish. The water is shallow and calm making it accessible for kids who are new to snorkeling. The entry is sandy and the reef starts about 50 yards from shore. There are no facilities so bring everything you need. The reef extends for over a mile, so the further out you go, the more diverse the marine life becomes.

A natural blowhole on Kauai south shore that shoots seawater through a lava tube creating a geyser-like eruption and an eerie moaning sound. Kids are mesmerized by the unpredictable eruptions that can shoot 50 feet into the air. The viewing area is safe and paved with a railing. The sound the blowhole makes as air is forced through the tube is haunting and tied to a Hawaiian legend about a giant lizard trapped in the rock. The whole visit takes 15 to 20 minutes and pairs well with a stop at nearby Allerton Garden.

Natural lava rock tide pools on the coast below the Makapu u Lighthouse Trail that fill with ocean water and create natural swimming holes. The pools range from shallow wading depth to deeper plunge pools. Kids love exploring the marine life in the shallows and swimming in the protected pools. Access requires a scramble over rocky lava terrain so this is best for sure-footed older kids. Waves can wash over the rocks so always check conditions and keep an eye on the ocean. When conditions are right, these pools are magical.

One of the most beautiful snorkeling beaches on Kauai with a reef that forms underwater tunnels and archways teeming with tropical fish. The backdrop of Makana Peak (Bali Hai from South Pacific) rising dramatically behind the beach makes the scenery postcard-perfect. In calm summer conditions the reef is shallow and accessible for confident young snorkelers. Winter brings dangerous surf so this is strictly a summer snorkeling destination. Sea turtles are regular visitors. The sand is golden and the setting is drop-dead gorgeous.

The most famous beach in Hawaii and still one of the best for families. The water is calm and warm, the sandy bottom slopes gently, and beginner surf lessons are available all along the shore. Kids can build sand castles, take a catamaran cruise, or try stand-up paddleboarding. The beach is backed by hotels and shops so everything you need is within walking distance. Lifeguards are on duty and the Duke Kahanamoku statue makes a great photo spot. Yes it is touristy but kids do not care about that.

Five miles of Gulf beach frontage where families can camp right on the sand and fall asleep to the sound of waves. The Mustang Island Paddling Trail winds through the bay side marshes and is outstanding for spotting dolphins and redfish from a kayak. Beach driving is permitted which means you can set up camp in a more secluded spot away from the crowds. The Junior Ranger program keeps kids learning while they play.

The longest undeveloped barrier island in the world stretches 70 miles along the Texas Gulf Coast and feels like the edge of civilization. Kids can hunt for seashells on miles of empty beach and during summer the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases at the Hatchling Release Program are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Malaquite Beach has a visitor center with showers and the campground sits right on the sand.

A family-oriented beach on the east end of Galveston Island with lifeguards on duty during summer months and a strict no-alcohol policy that keeps the atmosphere family-friendly. Umbrella and chair rentals are available right on the sand and the adjacent pavilion has food vendors and restrooms. The calm waters and gradual slope make it one of the safest Gulf swimming beaches for young children.
