A compact museum of Western art and artifacts right on the River Walk, in the beautifully restored old public library building. Kids gravitate to the stagecoach, the Pancho Villa saddle, and the collection of historic firearms and Native American artifacts. Three floors but small ones, so you are in and out in about an hour without anyone getting museum-legs. Good option when you are already downtown and the sky opens up. The sculpture courtyard beside the river is worth a look on the way out.

Housed in the old Lone Star Brewery on the River Walk Museum Reach, which is half the appeal because the building looks like a castle. The Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities galleries are the reliable kid win, with mummy cases and Roman glass. There is a strong Latin American folk art collection full of colour and animals that younger kids respond to. Free or reduced admission windows run weekly and family art days happen regularly. Galleries are compact enough to do in ninety minutes.

A small aquarium right on the River Walk built at toddler eye level, with a walk-through ocean tunnel where rays and sharks pass overhead. Touch pools let kids handle sea stars and anemones under supervision. The route is short and one-way, roughly an hour, which is a feature rather than a flaw with preschoolers. Its location inside the Shops at Rivercenter means you can duck in from a downpour without moving the car. Good rainy-day filler between River Walk stops rather than a destination on its own.

San Antonios purpose-built childrens museum and one of the newest in Texas, which shows in how well the spaces work. Kids climb a multi-story sensory structure, run a mock vet clinic and grocery, program small robots, and build circuits that actually light up. The Little Town area is scaled for toddlers with a market, a stage and a construction zone. Outdoor water play and a musical garden extend the visit on dry days. Two to four hours depending on how many times your kid loops back to the water tables.

A natural history and Texas heritage museum on the edge of Brackenridge Park with a strong dinosaur hall and a lot of hands-on space. The Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery has mounted skeletons and a dig area, and the McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery covers the states ecoregions with taxidermy dioramas kids can get close to. The four-story HEB Body Adventure is essentially an indoor obstacle course about how bodies work. Riverside outdoor areas and a treehouse-style science center add more if the weather holds. Easily a half day.

Over six miles of trails and an observation tower with panoramic Hill Country views make this one of the best family hiking parks in San Antonio. The playground near the main entrance keeps younger kids occupied while older siblings hit the trails. Paved paths are suitable for strollers and the pavilions with grills make it easy to turn a hike into a full afternoon with a cookout.

A 600-acre urban wilderness park with 10 miles of trails through classic Hill Country terrain of live oak and juniper right on the edge of San Antonio. Some trails are paved and wheelchair accessible making them great for strollers while the dirt trails climb to ridgeline views. The park is free and rarely crowded which makes it a peaceful escape from the city that kids and parents both appreciate.

Over 12,000 acres of Hill Country wilderness on the northwest edge of San Antonio with 40 miles of trails ranging from easy interpretive loops to rugged backcountry routes. Dinosaur tracks are embedded in the limestone along one trail which is an instant highlight for kids. The frontcountry trails are well-maintained and the Visitor Center has exhibits about the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone that the park protects.

The largest commercial cavern in Texas with massive formations illuminated by dramatic lighting on guided tours that descend 180 feet underground. Above ground a six-story ropes course and zip rails give older kids an adrenaline rush and the AMAZEn Ranch Roundup outdoor maze is a hit with younger children. The gem mining and panning activity keeps kids busy for a surprisingly long time.

A 330-acre urban park in San Antonio connected by a stunning land bridge that lets wildlife cross safely over a busy road and gives families a unique elevated walking experience. The nature playscape is one of the best in the state with climbing structures made from natural materials and a sand and water play area. Over eight miles of trails wind through restored savanna and woodland and the Urban Ecology Center has live animal displays.
