Syracuses hands-on science museum in the Armory Square district, with four floors of exhibits and a domed IMAX theater. Kids build and race things in the engineering hall, crawl through a simulated cave system, and set off reactions in the science demo areas. The Bristol Omnitheater is one of the few true domed IMAX screens in the region and the nature films land well with kids who need a sit-down break. A dedicated early-childhood area covers toddlers. Central New York winters make this a genuinely useful place to know about.

A small museum in a former bank building on the Hilo Bayfront about the 1946 and 1960 tsunamis that destroyed this exact neighbourhood. Survivor accounts, photographs and a wave tank explain how tsunamis form and why Hilo was hit so hard twice. Kids can see the high water marks and understand that the empty park across the street used to be a downtown. It is genuinely sobering, so it suits school-age kids and teens more than little ones. Under an hour and a short walk from the Mokupapapa center.

Five floors of genuinely hands-on science in a building that looks like a giant concrete cube someone dropped downtown. Kids race a T. rex on a 50-yard track, ride a chair up a cable in the engineering hall, and stand in a shake platform that simulates a real earthquake. The dinosaur hall is the crowd favorite with full mounted skeletons including an Alamosaurus that fills the room. The Moody Family Childrens Museum on the lower level is built for under-fives with water tables, a climbing structure, and a farmers market play area. Plan three hours minimum and buy tickets ahead on rainy weekends because it gets packed.

Three floors of hands-on science plus the Strasenburgh Planetarium next door, which runs star shows and full-dome films on a big tilted dome. Exhibits cover electricity, motion, regional geology and the Seneca and Haudenosaunee history of the area. The Hall of Ancient Life is built around an Apatosaurus mount and a Pentaceratops skull that holds a world record for size, and the scale of the room does the work. A Discovery Room lets younger kids handle fossils, bones and drawers of specimens. Galleries cover Oklahoma ecology, Native American cultures and the states geological history. Two to three hours and easy to reach from Oklahoma City.

Tinkering Garage lets kids build with real tools and materials, and CurioCity is a whole floor of physics and body science stations. Live science demonstrations with explosions and liquid nitrogen run through the day. There is a dedicated area for the under-fives and a small aviation hall with real aircraft. This is a full day and the single best indoor destination in Oklahoma.

A hands-on science museum in Ithaca with well over a hundred exhibits and a strong reputation among upstate families. Kids operate a walk-in kaleidoscope, launch things across the room, work a two-story ball machine and handle animals in the live animal room. The Curiosity Corner is a soft, quiet space for the under-fives. An outdoor science playground and the Sagan Planet Walk extend things when the weather is decent. It is the reason a rainy Finger Lakes gorge day does not have to be a write-off.

The visitor center for NASA Johnson Space Center and the closest most kids will get to standing inside the real thing. A tram tour runs out to historic Mission Control and the astronaut training facility where hardware for current missions is actually being worked on. Independence Plaza lets you walk through a shuttle replica mounted on a genuine 747 carrier aircraft. Indoors there are moon rocks you can touch, a Saturn V rocket hall, and Apollo capsules. Book the tram early because slots fill and the queue is the one part that will test kids patience.

A museum about the human body that is much less clinical than it sounds. The Amazing Body Pavilion walks you through a giant heart, a set of oversized organs, and a brain you can climb into, with sound and light effects the whole way. Kids see real preserved specimens, test their balance and reflexes, and try out surgical tools in a simulated operating room. It is smaller than the natural science museum across the park, which makes it a good second stop or a lower-stakes option with younger kids. Sits right in the Museum District so it pairs well with the childrens museum.

Austins childrens museum and the default answer when the weather ruins a Barton Springs plan. Everything is designed to be pulled, poured, built or knocked over, with a huge water play area, a light and shadow lab, and a maker studio with real tools. There is a separate space for babies and crawlers so the under-twos are not steamrolled by big kids. Outdoor backyard play space extends the visit on nice days. Two to three hours is realistic and there is a cafe on site when everyone crashes.

A natural history and Texas heritage museum on the edge of Brackenridge Park with a strong dinosaur hall and a lot of hands-on space. The Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery has mounted skeletons and a dig area, and the McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery covers the states ecoregions with taxidermy dioramas kids can get close to. The four-story HEB Body Adventure is essentially an indoor obstacle course about how bodies work. Riverside outdoor areas and a treehouse-style science center add more if the weather holds. Easily a half day.

A hidden gem combining an interactive nature museum with 289 acres of wildlife sanctuary. Kids can explore hands-on science exhibits inside, then hit the trails to spot native Texas wildlife. The outdoor dinosaur exhibit is a huge hit with younger explorers.
