A quick 0.6-mile hike just outside Lake Placid village that packs a surprisingly big view into a tiny package. The trail is short and manageable for even very young hikers. At the top, an open rock ledge provides a front-row seat to the High Peaks skyline. This is the perfect after-lunch hike when you have an hour to kill and want to give kids a taste of mountain hiking without the commitment of a longer trail.
One of the shortest and easiest fire tower hikes in the Adirondacks making it ideal for younger kids or families new to hiking. The trail is just 0.6 miles one way with about 600 feet of elevation gain. The restored fire tower at the top gives views of Canada Lake, Pine Lake, and the surrounding southern Adirondack hills. The whole outing from car to summit and back can be done in under an hour which is perfect when you want a quick hiking win. The trail is well-maintained with no technical sections.

The trail offers two routes to the summit: a short steep scramble and a longer gradual path, so families can choose based on their kids abilities. A flat-topped mesa rising dramatically above the Schoharie Valley with a short but rewarding 1.5-mile loop trail to cliff-top views. The summit is a wide open meadow on top of the cliffs with views that stretch across the valley farmland and surrounding hills. Kids enjoy the scramble up and the wide-open feeling at the top. The hike is short enough for younger kids but the ascent is steep in spots. Spring wildflowers on the summit meadow are beautiful and fall foliage views from the cliff edge are incredible.
A quick 0.8-mile loop across from Dogwood Campground in Beavers Bend State Park that delivers beautiful views of the Mountain Fork River without a big time commitment. The trail follows blue blazes through mixed forest and down to the riverbank where kids can toss rocks and watch the water flow. It is one of the easiest trails in the park and a perfect add-on when you have 30 minutes to fill between activities.
