Schroon Lake sits far enough north of Lake George to be much quieter, but it is right off the Northway, which makes it one of the easiest Adirondack campgrounds to reach from downstate. The village has a beach, an ice cream stand and a summer band concert series that kids enjoy more than they expect to. Sites are wooded and the lake views from the bluff are excellent.

Most of the sites here are reached only by paddling, which puts Forked Lake somewhere between a car campground and true wilderness camping. You park at the headquarters, load the canoe, and paddle to a site on a wooded shoreline with nothing around it. A small number of drive-in sites exist for families who want to test the water first. Facilities are deliberately minimal: pit toilets, no showers, carry your own water. For a family with kids old enough to paddle their own gear, it is a genuinely memorable step up.

That walkability is the whole argument for it: kids can go to the beach, the arcade and dinner without anyone getting back in the car. Sites are scattered through pine woods and a good number sit within sight of the water. The lake is big enough to paddle for an afternoon without being so big that wind becomes a problem for kids in kayaks. Inlet and Old Forge are both close for supplies and a rainy-day plan, and the Moose River Plains wild forest road starts at the campground gate.

The largest body of water in the Catskills outside the reservoirs, and the only Catskill state campground built around a swimming pond with a real sandy beach. Sites are spread through the woods around the shoreline and motors are not allowed, so the water stays calm for kids in kayaks and rowboats. Trails from the campground connect into the Big Indian Wilderness for longer hikes. Livingston Manor and the Beaverkill fly-fishing water are close by, and it is well under three hours from New York City.

The river is the reason to stay: it is famous fly-fishing water and the rocky banks are perfect for kids to wade and skip stones. High Falls Gorge is a couple of minutes up the road and the Whiteface toll road is barely farther. Sites are close together and traffic on Route 86 is audible, which is the trade for a location right between the two towns.

The largest and arguably best campground in the Catskills with 219 sites set between two lakes and surrounded by iconic hiking trails. Kids can swim at the beach, fish from shore, and explore miles of trails that lead to stunning overlooks including the famous Artist Point and Newman Ledge views of the Hudson Valley. Kaaterskill Falls is accessible right from the campground. Boat rentals are available on the lake. The combination of great camping, swimming, and world-class hiking makes this the premier family base camp in the Catskills.

The campground is a paddlers paradise with direct water access to a chain of ponds and lakes. The beach is sandy with a lifeguard and the water is warm by midsummer. Sites range from waterfront spots perfect for launching a canoe to wooded tent sites set back in the pines. The campground store and recreation programs make multi-day stays easy for families. Book months in advance for summer.

One of the most popular state campgrounds in the Adirondacks right on the shore of Lake George. The 251 sites are shaded by tall pines and many sit directly on the waterfront. Kids can swim at the campground beach, fish from shore, and explore nearby hiking trails. Its location just two miles south of Lake George village makes it convenient for day trips to shops and attractions. Reserve months in advance for summer weekends because this one books up fast.
