Tide-Pools

A stunning crescent-shaped beach on Lanai south shore that is widely considered one of the best beaches in Hawaii. The marine preserve protects the excellent reef and snorkeling is outstanding with spinner dolphins frequently visiting the bay. Tide pools on the left side of the beach are full of sea life that fascinates kids for hours. The beach has lifeguards, restrooms, and shaded picnic areas. In winter, humpback whales are visible from shore. Getting to Lanai requires a ferry from Maui or a flight, which adds to the adventure.

Despite the name, this rocky cove on the North Shore is one of the best tide pool and snorkeling spots for families on Oahu. In calm summer conditions the water is clear and full of tropical fish, sea turtles, and interesting rock formations. The tide pools on the outer edges fascinate younger kids who can find sea urchins, crabs, and small fish. The name comes from the shape of the rocks, not from actual sharks. Waves in winter make it unsafe so this is strictly a summer destination.

A protected beach park on the Hilo side with calm tide pools, a black sand beach, and an excellent chance of swimming with sea turtles. The lava rock forms natural pools that are sheltered from waves making it safe for kids to snorkel and explore. Green sea turtles feed on the algae growing on the rocks and sightings are almost guaranteed. The park has restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. The tide pools are fascinating for younger kids who can find sea urchins, crabs, and small fish. This is the best family snorkeling spot near Hilo.

Natural lava rock tide pools on the coast below the Makapu u Lighthouse Trail that fill with ocean water and create natural swimming holes. The pools range from shallow wading depth to deeper plunge pools. Kids love exploring the marine life in the shallows and swimming in the protected pools. Access requires a scramble over rocky lava terrain so this is best for sure-footed older kids. Waves can wash over the rocks so always check conditions and keep an eye on the ocean. When conditions are right, these pools are magical.
