A short paved loop trail through a lush tropical forest to a viewpoint overlooking a stunning 442-foot waterfall, one of the tallest in Hawaii. The 0.4-mile loop is accessible for strollers and passes through groves of bamboo, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowers. The falls plunge into a deep gorge surrounded by green vegetation and the scale is impressive. A smaller waterfall, Kahuna Falls, is visible from another viewpoint on the same loop. The whole visit takes about 30 minutes making it one of the easiest big-payoff experiences on the Big Island.

A spectacular botanical garden in a lush valley on Kauai south shore that was used as a filming location for Jurassic Park. The guided tour takes you through themed garden rooms with massive Moreton Bay fig trees, exotic tropical plants, and water features. Kids recognize the Jurassic Park trees immediately and the scale of the ancient trees is genuinely impressive. The valley setting with the stream running through it is beautiful. The McBryde Garden next door offers self-guided tours through a larger area. Reservations are required for both.

A beautifully maintained 26-acre botanical garden along the Road to Hana with ocean views, rare tropical plants, and the lookout platform where the iconic Jurassic Park scene was filmed. The self-guided trail winds through labeled plant collections with peacocks and other birds roaming freely. The Puohokamoa Falls viewpoint within the garden is stunning. Kids enjoy the duck pond, the colorful peacocks, and looking for the filming locations. It is a peaceful break from the intense Road to Hana driving and the views from the overlook are excellent.

A stunning tropical garden on a dramatic ocean bluff north of Hilo with trails winding through over 2000 species of tropical plants and flowers. The garden descends into Onomea Bay with viewpoints of waterfalls, the ocean, and towering palms. Kids enjoy the boardwalk trail that passes a waterfall and crosses bridges over streams. The variety of exotic flowers, palms, and tropical plants is incredible. This was a filming location for Jurassic Park and you can see why. The beauty is overwhelming and photographs here look like they were taken in a fantasy world.

A lush rainforest hike just 15 minutes from Waikiki that ends at a beautiful 150-foot waterfall. The 1.6-mile round trip trail winds through a tropical jungle with massive banyan trees, bamboo groves, and wild ginger. Kids feel like they have entered a movie set and in fact many films have been shot here. The trail can be muddy so sturdy shoes are essential. The waterfall at the end drops into a rocky pool surrounded by greenery. Swimming in the pool is discouraged due to bacteria but the view is stunning.

A family-friendly zipline course through the tropical upcountry of Maui with lines designed specifically for kids as young as 5. Multiple zipline operators offer courses ranging from short beginner lines to longer, faster lines for teens. The views of the ocean and mountains from the zipline platforms are incredible. The guides are encouraging and patient with nervous first-timers. Kids who are initially scared always want to go again by the end. This is a great adrenaline activity that works for a wide age range.

A scenic 4-mile drive on the Old Mamalahoa Highway north of Hilo through a lush tropical corridor with one-lane bridges, towering palms, and jungle vegetation. Kids love the narrow bridges and the feeling of driving through a tunnel of tropical plants. Pullover viewpoints offer ocean views from the cliff-top road. The drive passes through the small historic town of Pepe ekeo and the botanical garden entrance. It takes about 20 minutes and is a perfect low-effort scenic detour that feels like old Hawaii. The road reconnects to Highway 19 so you do not need to backtrack.

An 80-foot waterfall in the heart of Hilo that drops into a circular pool surrounded by a cave and tropical vegetation. The falls are visible from a paved overlook just steps from the parking lot making it one of the easiest waterfall viewpoints in Hawaii. On sunny mornings, rainbows form in the mist at the base of the falls, which is how it got its name. A short trail leads to the top of the falls through a grove of enormous banyan trees. The whole visit takes 15 to 30 minutes. A perfect quick stop in Hilo.

A 4-mile round trip trail through a dense bamboo forest that is one of the most magical walks in Hawaii. The trail ends at Waimoku Falls, a 400-foot waterfall cascading down a cliff face. Walking through the towering bamboo grove with the stalks creaking and swaying overhead is an unforgettable sensory experience for kids. The trail also passes a massive banyan tree. This hike is in the Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park at the end of the Road to Hana so plan your drive time accordingly.

Named for the tropical dwarf palmetto palms that give this park an unexpected jungle-like atmosphere along the San Marcos River. The warm artesian springs create a microclimate that supports lush vegetation you would not expect to find in central Texas. Kids love the novelty of hiking through what feels like a tropical forest and the river access is great for wading and tubing. The CCC-era stone buildings add historic charm.
