Waimanalo Beach

A long stretch of soft white sand on the windward coast that regularly tops best beach lists but never feels crowded. The water is turquoise and the Koolau Mountain backdrop is dramatic. The beach is wide with plenty of room for kids to run and the sand is powdery soft. The surf is usually gentle making it good for bodyboarding and swimming. Ironwood trees along the shore provide natural shade. This is where many local families spend their weekends because it combines beauty with a relaxed uncrowded vibe.

Grelle Recreation Area

A secluded cove on Lake Travis with 8 miles of wooded Hill Country trails that feel genuinely remote without requiring a long drive from Austin. Lake access points let kids scramble down to the water for a swim or wade on warm days and deer sightings along the trail are practically guaranteed. Because the park is unmanned and relatively unknown compared to Pace Bend or Krause Springs it stays significantly less crowded on summer weekends. The primitive no-frills atmosphere means this is best for families with kids old enough to enjoy a real hike.

Cooper Lake State Park

An uncrowded state park with two units on Cooper Lake in Northeast Texas. The South Sulphur Unit has a swim beach and screened shelters that are perfect for family camping. The Doctor’s Creek Unit offers equestrian camping and longer hiking trails through bottomland forest. The park rarely hits capacity which means you can often get a campsite on short notice when other parks are full.

Pedernales Falls Trammel Crossing

A lesser-known section of Pedernales Falls State Park where families can wade across the river at a historic low-water crossing and explore rocky pools on the other side. The crossing itself is fun for kids who love getting their feet wet and the flat limestone river bottom creates natural wading pools. This area is much less crowded than the main falls overlook and gives families room to spread out and enjoy the river at their own pace.
