It is cool, misty and green in a way that surprises families expecting Big Island beaches, and the short native forest nature trail is one of the best introductions to Hawaiian forest ecology anywhere on the island. The cabins are rented as a group unit with a shared dining hall rather than individually, so it suits multi-family trips. Waipio Valley Lookout is a half hour west.

A small state park on the west branch of Keuka Lake with campsites split between an open lakeside area and a shaded wooded loop, plus a swimming beach and a boat launch. Keuka is the quietest of the big Finger Lakes and the least crowded to swim in, and the campground has a genuinely relaxed feel. The bluff road above the park has some of the best lake views in the region, and Hammondsport at the south end has a walkable village square with ice cream and the Glenn Curtiss aviation museum.

An oceanfront campground in the Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park, on a grassy bluff above the surf at the end of the Road to Hana. Camping here turns the notorious Hana drive from a rushed day trip into two relaxed days, and it puts the Pipiwai Trail and the Oheo Gulch pools a short walk from your tent, hours before the tour vans arrive. Facilities are minimal: pit toilets, picnic tables, grills, and no potable water at all. Bring every drop you plan to drink.

Krause Springs is a privately owned property that has been in the same family for generations, and camping there means you can swim in the spring-fed natural pool early and late when the day crowd is gone. Tent sites sit on a grassy bluff above the springs with RV sites nearby, and the walk down to the water takes a couple of minutes. The butterfly garden and the rope swing over the natural pool are the parts kids describe afterward. Bring cash, because the gate has historically not taken cards.

Fredericksburg has almost no public camping, and this city-run park on the south side of town is the practical answer. It has RV sites with hookups and tent camping alongside a golf course, a swimming pool, sports fields and a creek, roughly ten minutes from Main Street and the shops. It is not a wilderness experience, but for a family using Fredericksburg as a base for Enchanted Rock, Old Tunnel and the peach stands, being able to walk kids to a pool after a hot morning is worth more than scenery.

A friendly, medium-sized state campground on a quiet lake just west of Long Lake village, with a sandy beach, a boat launch and a short trail up Owls Head Mountain nearby for families ready for a real climb. The lake is calm and shallow near shore, so young kids can wade a long way out. Long Lake village is a couple of minutes away with a beach, a diner and a float plane dock that kids find fascinating. It is a good middle option: real Adirondack quiet without being an hour from a grocery store.

The state campground closest to Lake George village, tucked into woods on historic battlefield ground and within walking distance of Million Dollar Beach and the steamboat docks. That walkability is the whole argument for it: kids can go to the beach, the arcade and dinner without anyone getting back in the car. Sites are wooded and reasonably private for a campground this close to town. It is small compared with the lakeshore campgrounds farther north, so summer weekends need reservations well in advance.

A large state park on Lake Wister in the foothills of the Ouachitas, with several separate camping areas along the shoreline plus cabins. The lake is big enough for real boating and fishing but the campgrounds stay reasonably quiet, and the swimming areas are shallow and kid-friendly. Because the camping areas are spread out, it is worth asking which loop suits you before booking: some sit right on the water, others are set back in the woods. It pairs naturally with the Talimena Scenic Drive an hour to the west.

Letchworth is seventeen miles long, which is exactly why staying inside it matters: from the Highbanks camping area you can reach the three main waterfalls, the overlooks and the trailheads without repeatedly driving in from outside. The park has a large campground plus rental cabins in the woods, along with a swimming pool complex that saves many hot afternoons. Sunrise over the gorge with the mist still in it is the reason people book a second night. Autumn foliage weekends are the busiest of the year.

A state campground between Lewey Lake and Indian Lake in the central Adirondacks, with a swimming beach, a boat launch and direct access to trails heading into the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. Because it sits between two bodies of water, you get a sheltered small lake for kids to paddle and a big one for fishing and boating, without moving the car. The setting under Snowy Mountain is dramatic and the campground rarely feels as packed as the Lake George area. Cell service is essentially nonexistent, which some families count as a feature.

One of the larger state campgrounds in the central Adirondacks, on a clear lake outside Inlet with a sandy swimming beach and a boat launch. Sites are scattered through pine woods and a good number sit within sight of the water. The lake is big enough to paddle for an afternoon without being so big that wind becomes a problem for kids in kayaks. Inlet and Old Forge are both close for supplies and a rainy-day plan, and the Moose River Plains wild forest road starts at the campground gate.

Lost Maples is where Texas gets a real autumn, and staying overnight in November is the only way to beat the day-trip traffic that backs up FM 187 on fall weekends. The developed campground has water-and-electric sites along the Sabinal River near the entrance, with primitive hike-in sites farther back for families with older kids. Mornings on the East Trail before the crowds arrive are the payoff. The park caps daily entries during peak foliage, so a campsite is effectively your guaranteed way in.

The largest body of water in the Catskills outside the reservoirs, and the only Catskill state campground built around a swimming pond with a real sandy beach. Sites are spread through the woods around the shoreline and motors are not allowed, so the water stays calm for kids in kayaks and rowboats. Trails from the campground connect into the Big Indian Wilderness for longer hikes. Livingston Manor and the Beaverkill fly-fishing water are close by, and it is well under three hours from New York City.

An LCRA park on the upper end of Lake Travis with primitive and improved campsites, miles of mountain bike trails, and one of the best bluebonnet displays in Central Texas in early spring. Campsites are simple and spread out, and the trail network is gentle enough that kids on their own bikes can ride real singletrack without it turning into a fight. Facilities are limited to restrooms and water at central points rather than at each site. It is a good low-key alternative when Pace Bend is packed.

The main drive-up campground in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, set in a grove of tall eucalyptus and ohia at around 4,000 feet. Staying inside the park is the whole point: you can drive out to the Kilauea overlooks after dark to see any active glow without a two-hour round trip from Hilo or Kona, and be back at the tent in fifteen minutes. A small number of simple cabins have historically been available alongside the tent sites. It is genuinely cold at night by Hawaii standards, and rain is common.

A state campground on a small quiet lake just outside Old Forge, which makes it the practical base for a western Adirondacks family trip. The lake has a sandy swimming beach and a flat loop trail that circles the whole shoreline in an easy couple of hours. Old Forge itself is three minutes away, meaning the Enchanted Forest water park, the Fulton Chain boat tours and actual restaurants are all within reach on a rainy afternoon. Sites are wooded and spread out enough to feel like camping rather than a parking lot.

A Travis County park on a peninsula jutting into Lake Travis with nine miles of shoreline and primitive lakeside camping you can drive right up to. Sites on the east side are sheltered coves with gentle water entry that suits younger kids, while the west side has the dramatic limestone cliffs. Camping is primitive: no hookups, no water at the sites, and vault toilets. What you get instead is a tent pitched a few feet from the water for a fraction of what a cabin costs, twenty minutes from Austin traffic.

Camping here puts you inside one of the darkest skies within an hour of Austin, and the park runs regular night-sky programs to take advantage of it. The main campground has water-and-electric sites in oak and juniper woods, plus walk-in primitive sites and a backpacking area for families ready to carry gear a couple of miles. Days go to the falls overlook, the swimming beach downstream at Trammel Crossing, and the bird blind. The falls themselves are for looking, not swimming, and the river can rise fast after upstream rain.

Pine Creek Lake is the quieter Army Corps reservoir west of Broken Bow, ringed by several small campgrounds and boat-ramp parks. It draws a fraction of the traffic Broken Bow Lake gets, so if your family cares more about a calm swimming cove and an empty ramp than about restaurants and shops, this is the trade to make. Camping areas are basic: gravel pads, picnic tables, vault or basic restrooms, some with electric. Bring everything you need, because services around the lake are limited.

A tiny lakeside state park east of Hugo that rarely feels crowded, with shaded campsites, a swimming area and a small lake stocked for fishing. The scale is the point for families with young kids: you can see your car and the water from the same picnic table. It is roughly an hour from Broken Bow, which makes it a workable overflow option when Beavers Bend is fully booked for a holiday weekend. Amenities are simple, so stock up in Hugo or Idabel on the way in.
