Pilot Knob Preserve

A 157-acre preserve managed by the Lake George Land Conservancy with gentle trails winding through meadows and forests above the southern tip of Lake George. The 1.5-mile loop trail is perfect for younger hikers and offers nice views of the lake from several overlooks. Wildflowers fill the meadows in spring and early summer. It is a quieter alternative to the more crowded Lake George trails and a great spot for a nature walk with kids who are not ready for a big summit hike.

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

A federal wildlife refuge protecting endangered golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos where a morning hike during spring is one of the genuinely magical free experiences near Austin. Kids can pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at the Doeskin Ranch visitor center and work through wildlife observation challenges on the trail. The 0.4-mile Pond and Prairie trail is flat and manageable for very young children with excellent butterfly and wildflower sightings in spring. Warbler Vista adds another easy loop where older kids can scan the cedar-juniper hillsides for the distinctive black-and-yellow warbler with binoculars.

Limestone Quarry Park

A hidden neighborhood park built around an old limestone quarry with exposed rock walls and a winding trail called Taychas Trail that passes through native grasses and wildflowers. Kids love the adventure of exploring what feels like a secret canyon right in the middle of a subdivision. The layered rock walls and natural prairie grasses create a portrait backdrop that looks nothing like typical suburban North Texas. It is small but packs a visual punch especially during spring wildflower season.

LBJ National Grasslands

Over 20,000 acres of rolling prairie and oak savanna just north of the DFW metroplex managed by the US Forest Service. The TADRA Point trail system has excellent mountain biking for older kids and the Black Creek Lake area offers primitive camping where families can really get away from it all. Wildflower season in spring is spectacular across the open grasslands.

Tandy Hills Natural Area

One of the last patches of untouched native prairie in North Texas, right on the edge of downtown Fort Worth. In spring the wildflower displays are spectacular, with bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush carpeting the hillsides. Kids love scrambling up the hills for the panoramic skyline views from the top, and the trails are short enough that even less enthusiastic hikers can handle the full loop. A playground and picnic area near the trailhead round out the visit.
