Combine it with the Bullock a few blocks away for a full downtown rainy day.

A compact museum of Western art and artifacts right on the River Walk, in the beautifully restored old public library building. Kids gravitate to the stagecoach, the Pancho Villa saddle, and the collection of historic firearms and Native American artifacts. Three floors but small ones, so you are in and out in about an hour without anyone getting museum-legs. Good option when you are already downtown and the sky opens up. The sculpture courtyard beside the river is worth a look on the way out.

Long Islands aviation and space museum on the old Mitchel Field, with more than seventy aircraft and spacecraft including a genuine Apollo Lunar Module built on Long Island by Grumman. Kids climb into cockpits, work flight simulators and walk under fighters hung from the ceiling. A dome theater runs space and nature films. Ancient American gold, Egyptian artifacts, and big contemporary installations give younger kids something to point at without you having to explain much. Less a traditional aquarium and more an indoor rainforest you walk down through, starting at the treetops and spiraling to the water at the bottom. Sloths, toucans and monkeys move around in the open air above your head, which surprises first-time visitors every single time. It is compact enough that toddlers do not melt down and interesting enough that older kids stay engaged. The whole route is one-way and stroller-friendly.

A former Nabisco box-printing factory turned into a vast daylit museum of large-scale contemporary art, and it works with kids far better than most art museums do because everything is enormous. Richard Serras steel spirals are rooms you walk into and get lost in, and Walter De Marias floor pieces stretch the length of a warehouse. There is nothing to read and nothing to understand, just scale and space, which lets kids react honestly. Free admission for children keeps it low risk. Ninety minutes is plenty and Beacons Main Street is right there for food.

Tulsas childrens museum in a purpose-built building beside the Arkansas River, with multiple floors of hands-on play. Kids build in a maker space with real tools, run water through channels and dams, climb a multi-story structure and put on shows in a performance area. A separate space serves crawlers and toddlers. It sits next to Gathering Place so a wet morning indoors can turn into an afternoon at the playground when the sky clears. Two to three hours for the under-tens.

Part aquarium, part small amusement park, which is either a bonus or a hazard depending on your kids. The Adventure Exhibit runs through themed zones including a sunken temple, a Louisiana swamp with alligators, and a shark tunnel. White tigers live in a large indoor habitat that surprises everyone the first time. Outside there is a small train, a Ferris wheel and a carousel, plus a restaurant with a huge central tank. Rides are individually priced on top of aquarium admission so decide the budget before you walk in.

Four floors of play built around Buffalo and western New York themes, sitting right at Canalside downtown. Kids move water through a scale model of the Erie Canal with locks that actually work, run a mini Wegmans-style grocery, and climb a multi-story tower structure in the atrium. Energy and innovation exhibits tie into Texas oil and gas in a way that actually lands with school-age kids. Half a day here is easy and the dome theater is a good reset when everyone is fried.
