Browse 68 kid-friendly nature adventures across Hawaii, New York, Oklahoma, & Texas.

Nature adventures are some of the best family outings because they work for every age. Toddlers can toddle on boardwalk trails. Grade-schoolers can identify birds and catch bugs. Teens can learn photography and wildlife tracking. And most nature preserves and wildlife refuges are free or low-cost.

What Makes a Great Family Nature Adventure

The best nature spots for families combine easy trails, visible wildlife, and some kind of hands-on learning opportunity. Look for places with:

  • Nature centers or visitor centers - Interpretive exhibits help kids understand what they’re seeing and give context to the wildlife and habitats. Rangers and naturalists love talking to curious kids.
  • Boardwalks and observation platforms - These let families explore wetlands, forests, and coastlines without difficult terrain. They’re stroller-friendly and give elevated views for spotting wildlife.
  • Guided programs - Many nature centers and Audubon centers offer free or low-cost family programs, nature walks, and seasonal events. Check schedules before your visit.

Get Kids Engaged

  • Download iNaturalist. This free app lets kids photograph plants and animals and get them identified by a global community. It turns any nature walk into a scavenger hunt.
  • Bring binoculars. Even cheap kid-sized binoculars make wildlife spotting dramatically more exciting.
  • Let them lead. Give kids the trail map and let them navigate. They’ll pay more attention to their surroundings when they feel responsible for the route.
  • Keep a nature journal. A small notebook for sketching plants, animals, and interesting finds turns observations into memories.

Best Seasons

Spring is peak season for birding (migratory birds pass through Texas in huge numbers March-May), wildflowers, and comfortable weather. Fall brings raptor migration and returning waterfowl. Winter is excellent for birding at coastal refuges - roseate spoonbills, whooping cranes, and hundreds of waterfowl species overwinter on the Texas coast.
