Nature Adventures
Browse 68 kid-friendly nature adventures across Hawaii, New York, Oklahoma, & Texas.
Nature adventures are some of the best family outings because they work for every age. Toddlers can toddle on boardwalk trails. Grade-schoolers can identify birds and catch bugs. Teens can learn photography and wildlife tracking. And most nature preserves and wildlife refuges are free or low-cost.
Hawaii has the largest group of these on the site, and it is a genuinely different kind of nature outing: much of what you see there - honu, nene, monk seals, and most of the plants - exists nowhere else on earth, and a lot of it is endangered and legally protected.
What Makes a Great Family Nature Adventure
The best nature spots for families combine easy trails, visible wildlife, and some kind of hands-on learning opportunity. Look for places with:
- Nature centers or visitor centers - Interpretive exhibits help kids understand what they’re seeing and give context to the wildlife and habitats. Rangers and naturalists love talking to curious kids.
- Boardwalks and observation platforms - These let families explore wetlands, forests, and coastlines without difficult terrain. They’re stroller-friendly and give elevated views for spotting wildlife.
- Guided programs - Many nature centers and Audubon centers offer free or low-cost family programs, nature walks, and seasonal events. Check schedules before your visit.
Get Kids Engaged
- Download iNaturalist. This free app lets kids photograph plants and animals and get them identified by a global community. It turns any nature walk into a scavenger hunt.
- Bring binoculars. Even cheap kid-sized binoculars make wildlife spotting dramatically more exciting.
- Let them lead. Give kids the trail map and let them navigate. They’ll pay more attention to their surroundings when they feel responsible for the route.
- Keep a nature journal. A small notebook for sketching plants, animals, and interesting finds turns observations into memories.
Watching wildlife responsibly
This matters most in Hawaii, where the rules are legal rather than advisory. Stay 10 feet from sea turtles and 50 feet from Hawaiian monk seals, do not touch either, and give nesting seabirds a wide berth. Enforcement is real and the fines are large - but the better reason is that these are small, fragile populations. Teaching a child to back away and watch from a distance is part of the outing.
Elsewhere the same principle holds in a milder form: stay on the boardwalk, do not feed anything, and keep dogs leashed near nesting areas.
Best Seasons
Spring is peak season for birding (migratory birds pass through Texas in huge numbers March-May), wildflowers, and comfortable weather. Fall brings raptor migration and returning waterfowl. Winter is excellent for birding at coastal refuges - roseate spoonbills, whooping cranes, and hundreds of waterfowl species overwinter on the Texas coast.
Hawaii watches year-round, with two seasonal highlights: humpback whales from December through April, and seabird nesting in summer. New York is best in spring and fall migration, with bald eagles along the Hudson and the St. Lawrence in winter.
