Galveston Island State Park

Galveston Island State Park offers a rare two-in-one coastal experience: the Gulf side gives you classic beach camping and swimming, while the bay side opens up a world of kayak trails, birding, and coastal wetland exploration. It’s one of the most family-friendly beach camping destinations on the Texas coast.

Beach side (Gulf): The beach-side campground puts your tent or RV steps from the sand. Kids can swim, build sandcastles, and hunt for shells without crossing any roads. The beach is wide and relatively uncrowded compared to Galveston’s commercial beaches. Dawn and dusk are the best times for spotting dolphins offshore.

Bay side: This is where the park really shines for nature-loving families. Kayak and paddle through the coastal wetland trails - a network of calm, shallow channels perfect for beginners and kids in tandem kayaks. The bay side is a birding hotspot - roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, egrets, and brown pelicans are common. Observation platforms along the trails give elevated views of the wetlands.

Hiking and biking: The park has about 4 miles of trails on the bay side, including boardwalks through the marshes and sandy paths through coastal prairie. The trails are flat and easy for all ages. Birding is the main attraction here - bring binoculars.

Camping: Both Gulf-side and bay-side campgrounds offer a range of sites from primitive tent camping to full RV hookups. Gulf-side sites are the most popular for the beach access, while bay-side sites are quieter and better for wildlife viewing. Reserve well in advance for summer and holiday weekends.

Entrance fees: $5 per day for adults, kids 12 and under free. Camping ranges from $15-$30 per night. Kayak rentals are available through concessioners at the park.

Practical tips: The island can be windy - bring a good beach tent or shade structure for the Gulf side. Mosquitoes can be fierce on the bay side, especially in summer - come prepared with repellent. The park is about 10 miles from the main Galveston tourist strip, so stock up on groceries before arriving.
