Adventures in Galveston, TX
Galveston delivers classic coastal adventures perfect for Texas families. Whether your kids want to build sandcastles on the beach, paddle through coastal wetlands, or camp steps from the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston has something for every age group.
What to Do
Galveston Island State Park is the standout family destination on the island. The park straddles both sides of the road - the Gulf side offers beach camping and swimming, while the bay side opens up kayak trails through coastal wetlands teeming with wildlife. Roseate spoonbills, herons, brown pelicans, and dolphins are common sightings. The bay-side boardwalk trails and observation platforms are great for families who want to explore without getting in the water.
Stewart Beach is Galveston’s most family-friendly public beach - lifeguarded swimming, clean restrooms, a snack bar, and a playground keep families comfortable all day. The gentle surf and wide sandy beach make it ideal for younger kids.
Weekend Itinerary
Day 1: Set up camp at Galveston Island State Park (Gulf-side sites for beach access, bay-side for wildlife). Spend the afternoon swimming and beachcombing.
Day 2: Morning kayak on the bay side - the calm, shallow channels are perfect for beginners. Afternoon: drive to Stewart Beach for a change of scenery, or explore the Strand Historic District downtown for ice cream and shopping.
Day 3: Hike the bay-side nature trails and spot birds from the observation platforms before heading home.
Getting There
Galveston is about 50 miles south of Houston (roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic). Take I-45 South all the way to the island. Stock up on groceries in League City or Texas City before crossing the causeway - Galveston Island State Park is 10 miles from the main tourist area.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March-May) and fall (October-November) offer comfortable beach weather and peak birding. Summer is hot and busy but prime for beach camping - book months ahead. Winter is mild, uncrowded, and surprisingly pleasant for hiking and birdwatching.
Good to Know
