A 180-acre reservoir with a roped-off swim area and a gently sloping pebble beach that is one of the easiest free lake days near Austin. Cedar Breaks Park

A well-maintained Army Corps park on Lake Georgetown with a swim beach and one of the best campgrounds in Central Texas. The sites are large and well-spaced under mature oaks and the park connects directly to the Good Water Trail for hiking and biking. Cooper Lake State Park

An uncrowded state park with two units on Cooper Lake in Northeast Texas. The South Sulphur Unit has a swim beach and screened shelters that are perfect for family camping. The Doctor’s Creek Unit offers equestrian camping and longer hiking trails through bottomland forest. The park rarely hits capacity which means you can often get a campsite on short notice when other parks are full.

Daingerfield State Park

A small gem of a park built around an 80-acre lake that is widely considered one of the most beautiful spots in East Texas especially in fall when the sweetgums and oaks blaze with color. Kids can swim at the sandy beach or rent paddleboats to explore the lake. The 2.5-mile trail circling the lake is easy enough for young hikers and the CCC-era stone dam is an impressive piece of history.

East Fork Park

A Corps of Engineers park on the southeast shore of Lake Lavon with a sandy swim beach that is one of the best-kept secrets in Collin County. The campground has full hookups and sits right on the lake with excellent sunset views. Kids can fish from the shore and there is a big playground near the beach area.

Galveston Island State Park

A state park split between bay side and beach side giving families two completely different experiences in one visit. The bay side has kayak trails through coastal wetlands where kids can spot herons and crabs from the observation platform. The beach side offers direct Gulf of Mexico access for swimming and beachcombing. Camping is available on both sides and the bay side sites are particularly scenic at sunset.

Lake Brownwood State Park

Padre Island National Seashore

The longest undeveloped barrier island in the world stretches 70 miles along the Texas Gulf Coast and feels like the edge of civilization. Kids can hunt for seashells on miles of empty beach and during summer the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases at the Hatchling Release Program are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Malaquite Beach has a visitor center with showers and the campground sits right on the sand.

Sea Rim State Park

A unique coastal park where Gulf beach meets freshwater marsh creating one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the Texas coast. The Gambusia Nature Trail is a boardwalk through the marsh where kids can spot alligators and dozens of bird species. The beach side offers open Gulf swimming and the marsh unit has a 4.5-mile paddling trail through channels teeming with wildlife. It is one of the least visited state parks which means you often have the beach to yourself.

Stewart Beach

A family-oriented beach on the east end of Galveston Island with lifeguards on duty during summer months and a strict no-alcohol policy that keeps the atmosphere family-friendly. Meadowmere Park

One of only two roped-off swim zones on Lake Grapevine, with a gently sloping sandy beach that makes it easy for little ones to wade in at their own pace. Ray Roberts Lake State Park

A sprawling state park spread across multiple units around a beautiful North Texas lake. The Isle du Bois unit has a sandy beach swimming area that kids go crazy for, plus a kids-only fishing pond that is stocked and practically guarantees a catch. The 20-mile Greenbelt Corridor trail connects the park units and is paved enough for strollers and training wheels. Camping options range from tent sites to screened shelters.

Little Elm Beach

One of the few spots in North Texas where kids can splash in a real sandy-shore lake beach without worrying about boat traffic, since the swim area is fully roped off. Free loaner life jackets are available right on-site, which takes a huge weight off parents’ shoulders. Between the swim area, sand volleyball courts, playgrounds, and kayak rentals, there’s enough to keep the whole crew entertained for a full day.
