Camp Santanoni Historic Area

A 9.8-mile round trip hike (or bike ride) on a wide old carriage road through beautiful forest to a sprawling Great Camp on the shore of Newcomb Lake. The flat terrain makes it easier than the distance suggests and many families bring bikes to cut the time in half. At the end, the historic camp buildings sit on a stunning lakeside setting that feels like a secret Adirondack world. Kids can explore the old buildings and swim in the lake before heading back. This is a genuinely unique family adventure.

Ke Ala Hele Makalae (Kauai Coastal Path)

A paved multi-use path along the east coast of Kauai stretching about 4 miles from Lydgate Beach to Kapaa town and beyond. The path hugs the coastline with ocean views the entire way and passes beaches, parks, and the Kapaa town shops and restaurants. Bike rentals are available near the path. Kids love cruising along the oceanfront and stopping at beaches along the way. The path is flat and smooth, perfect for family biking. Whale watching from the path is excellent in winter. This is the most scenic bike ride in all of Hawaii.

Verona Beach State Park

A family park on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake with a 1000-foot sandy beach, campground, and nature trails. The beach is excellent for families with a gentle slope into the water and lifeguards during summer. The lake is warm and shallow near shore. The 45-site campground is set back in the woods. Trails wind through a variety of habitats including wetlands that are great for birding. The park connects to the Erie Canalway Trail for biking. Oneida Lake sunsets from the beach are gorgeous.

Bastrop State Park

A surprising island of loblolly pines known as the Lost Pines sits 100 miles east of the main Hill Country pine range and kids find the shady canopy unlike anything else near Austin. Seven miles of trails wind through recovering forest with white-tailed deer and woodpecker sightings along the way. The staffed swimming pool with lifeguards is open May through September and the Junior Ranger program gives curious kids a structured way to explore. Park Road 1C to Buescher State Park is a beautiful 12-mile drive or bike route through the pines.

Lake Pflugerville Park

A 180-acre reservoir with a roped-off swim area and a gently sloping pebble beach that is one of the easiest free lake days near Austin. Kids love the playground right next to the water and the 3-mile paved loop around the lake is perfect for family bike rides or stroller walks. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available on site so you can turn a simple swim into a full water adventure. The picnic areas with grills make it easy to stay all day without spending a dime on food.

San Gabriel Park

One of the most beloved free family parks in the Austin metro sitting where the two forks of the San Gabriel River meet beneath 200-year-old live oak trees. The creative wooden playscape has been recognized as one of the best in the state and kids can spend an entire afternoon climbing the multi-level structure and racing down slides. The 1.6-mile crushed-granite loop trail is flat and wide enough for strollers and bikes side by side with evening lighting for later visits. Fishing along the river adds an easy low-key activity for kids who want something quieter after burning energy on the playground.

Brushy Creek Regional Trail

A 14-mile paved trail connecting Cedar Park to Round Rock along Brushy Creek with playgrounds spaced at regular intervals that make it perfect for families with younger riders. The trail is wide and flat enough for kids on training wheels and it passes through several parks with restrooms and water fountains. A section along the creek has shallow wading areas where kids can cool off mid-ride.

Buffalo Bayou Park

A beautifully renovated 160-acre urban park stretching along Buffalo Bayou with wide paved trails perfect for family biking and an incredible destination playground with climbing nets and hillside slides. Kayak and bike rentals are available on-site and the park runs a popular free bat viewing program at the Waugh Drive bridge where thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at sunset. The Johnny Steele Dog Park is one of the best in Texas.

Lady Bird Lake

A no-wake reservoir on the Colorado River through downtown Austin where families can rent kayaks and paddleboards to explore miles of calm water surrounded by the city skyline and lush greenery. Kids love spotting turtles sunning on logs and the occasional great blue heron hunting along the banks. The 10-mile hike-and-bike trail around the lake is one of the best urban trails in Texas for families on foot or wheels.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park

A well-maintained park on a 9,460-acre East Texas lake with excellent fishing and a roped swimming area that families appreciate. The lighted fishing pier is great for evening outings and the bike trail loop through pine forest is fun for kids of all riding abilities. Campsites are shaded and well-spaced with some sitting right on the water. It is less visited than many state parks which means weekend availability is usually good.

Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway

A 20-mile converted rail trail connecting Weatherford to Mineral Wells that is one of the best family biking routes west of Fort Worth. The crushed granite surface is smooth enough for kids on training wheels and the gentle grade means no tough hills. The trail crosses several old railroad bridges that give kids a sense of adventure and the midpoint trailhead has restrooms and water. It is an excellent introduction to longer distance riding for kids building endurance.

Lake Somerville State Park & Trailway

A state park in two units connected by a 21-mile rail-to-trail that is perfect for family mountain biking and hiking. The Birch Creek Unit has a swim beach on the lake and the Nails Creek Unit has excellent fishing. Kids love spotting the white-tailed deer that are abundant throughout the park. The trail between units passes through rolling post oak savanna and makes a great day ride for families with older kids on bikes.

Trinity Trails

The Trinity Trails is a massive 100+ mile network of paved trails running along the Trinity River through Fort Worth and into surrounding communities. It’s completely free, open year-round, and one of the best urban trail systems in Texas for families who want to bike, walk, jog, or just get outside without leaving the city. Best sections for families: The stretch from Trinity Park (near the zoo) to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is one of the most scenic and family-friendly segments - about 3 miles of flat, paved trail along the river with shade trees, playgrounds, and restrooms along the way. Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailway

One of the only spots in North Texas where families can try real rock climbing on natural sandstone formations at Penitentiary Hollow. The cliffs range from 20 to 40 feet and draw climbers of all skill levels. Beyond the climbing, there is a 646-acre lake for swimming and fishing, a 20-mile rail trail perfect for family biking, and solid campgrounds for an overnight stay. The Junior Ranger and wilderness survival programs give kids something extra to work toward.

Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Ray Roberts Lake State Park is a sprawling North Texas destination spread across several units on a 29,000-acre lake about an hour north of Dallas. The Isle du Bois unit is the most popular for families, with a sandy swim beach, a dedicated kids fishing pond, camping, and miles of trails. River Legacy Parks

A 1,300-acre urban oasis along the Trinity River with over eight miles of paved hike-and-bike trails shaded by towering pecans and oaks. Kids love the custom-built playgrounds, and older kids can tackle the 10 miles of off-road mountain bike trails. A canoe launch gives families easy access to the river, and the adjacent River Legacy Living Science Center has indoor nature exhibits with live animals that younger kids find fascinating.

White Rock Lake

The 9.4-mile paved loop around this 1,015-acre lake is one of the most popular family biking routes in Dallas. The trail is wide and flat enough for kids on training wheels, and there are restrooms, water fountains, and picnic spots spaced around the whole loop. Families can rent kayaks and paddleboards right on the water, and the north end has a dog park for four-legged family members. On a clear day the downtown Dallas skyline makes a great backdrop for the ride.
