Summer sailing camps on Lake Travis that publish a non-member rate right next to the member rate, which is the clearest sign a club actually admits the public. Kids learn on small dinghies, Picos, Sunfish and Flying Juniors, starting with adventure sailing and adding racing instruction as the summer goes on. Days also include swimming in the lake, arts and crafts, games and outdoor STEM learning, so it works as a full summer camp rather than only a sailing course. Each week closes with a show and tell for parents, an award ceremony and ice cream. There is a separate short Saturday session for children aged 5 to 8.

A small, old CCC park strung along a mile of the Blanco River right at the edge of town, and one of the gentlest introductions to camping in the Hill Country. Sites sit under pecan trees a short walk from the dammed swimming area, and because the park is compact you are never far from the restrooms or the car. Being inside Blanco means groceries, tacos and a hardware store are five minutes away if you forget something. It fills fast in summer because it is easy in exactly the way big parks are not.

A Forest Service campground in the Ouachita National Forest built around a small lake with a sandy swimming beach. The setting is classic national forest: tall pines, well-spaced sites, a lake loop trail kids can walk on their own, and no commercial development in sight. There is a separate equestrian camping area, so horse trailers do not end up parked next to family tents. Facilities are simpler than a state park, which keeps both the cost and the crowds down.

A state campground on a bluff above Schroon Lake with a swimming beach at the bottom of the hill and a boat launch nearby. Schroon Lake sits far enough north of Lake George to be much quieter, but it is right off the Northway, which makes it one of the easiest Adirondack campgrounds to reach from downstate. The village has a beach, an ice cream stand and a summer band concert series that kids enjoy more than they expect to. Sites are wooded and the lake views from the bluff are excellent.

Garner is the most beloved family campground in Texas and the reason many Hill Country summers happen at all. Hundreds of campsites sit under giant pecan and cypress trees along the Frio River, with a mix of tent sites, water-and-electric sites, screened shelters and a set of small CCC-era cabins. Kids spend the day tubing and swimming and the evening at the famous summer jukebox dance at the pavilion. Summer sites are released on a rolling window and are gone within minutes, which is why regulars set calendar reminders.

A state campground on the southeastern shore of Raquette Lake with one of the best swimming beaches in the Adirondack Park: a long sandy crescent with a gradual entry that suits toddlers as well as teenagers. Sites sit back in tall pines behind the beach and a boat launch gives access to one of the largest natural lakes in the park. It is a straightforward, old-fashioned family campground where the day plan is usually just the beach. The village store at Raquette Lake covers basic supplies.

An indoor water park kept at about 84 degrees year-round, which makes February and August equally irrelevant. Body slides, tube slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and a giant tipping bucket play structure cover everyone from toddlers to teens. Water park access is included with an overnight stay and this is the whole reason families book it. Beyond the water there is a MagiQuest wand game through the hotel hallways, an arcade, and a ropes course. It is not cheap but it is genuinely weatherproof and one stay usually kills two full days.

Four miles of Guadalupe River frontage with towering bald cypress along the banks, about forty-five minutes north of San Antonio. The campground has water-and-electric sites plus walk-in tent sites, all a short stroll from the river crossings where kids tube, swim and hunt for crawfish. Rangers run junior ranger programs and guided walks over at the Honey Creek unit next door. Because it is close to two major cities the weekend sites go quickly, but midweek in spring you can nearly have the river to yourself.

An Oklahoma state park on the shore of Hugo Lake about an hour and a half west of Broken Bow, with campsites spread along the water in more than one camping area. It is a calmer, less discovered alternative to the Beavers Bend crowds, and the swimming beach, boat ramps and fishing keep kids busy without any admission line. Sites range from primitive tent spots to RV sites with hookups. Families often use it as a first or last night on an Oklahoma road trip because it is right off Highway 70.

Inks Lake is a constant-level lake, which means the swimming and paddling are reliable even in a dry Texas summer when the rivers drop. The campground has a large spread of water-and-electric sites, walk-in tent sites and a handful of small limited-use cabins, many within sight of the pink granite shoreline. Devils Waterhole, the cliff-jumping cove at the north end of the park, is the thing kids will talk about afterward. It is about an hour from Austin, which makes it one of the easiest first camping trips in Central Texas.

A small state park on the west branch of Keuka Lake with campsites split between an open lakeside area and a shaded wooded loop, plus a swimming beach and a boat launch. Keuka is the quietest of the big Finger Lakes and the least crowded to swim in, and the campground has a genuinely relaxed feel. The bluff road above the park has some of the best lake views in the region, and Hammondsport at the south end has a walkable village square with ice cream and the Glenn Curtiss aviation museum.

Krause Springs is a privately owned property that has been in the same family for generations, and camping there means you can swim in the spring-fed natural pool early and late when the day crowd is gone. Tent sites sit on a grassy bluff above the springs with RV sites nearby, and the walk down to the water takes a couple of minutes. The butterfly garden and the rope swing over the natural pool are the parts kids describe afterward. Bring cash, because the gate has historically not taken cards.

A friendly, medium-sized state campground on a quiet lake just west of Long Lake village, with a sandy beach, a boat launch and a short trail up Owls Head Mountain nearby for families ready for a real climb. The lake is calm and shallow near shore, so young kids can wade a long way out. Long Lake village is a couple of minutes away with a beach, a diner and a float plane dock that kids find fascinating. It is a good middle option: real Adirondack quiet without being an hour from a grocery store.

A large state park on Lake Wister in the foothills of the Ouachitas, with several separate camping areas along the shoreline plus cabins. The lake is big enough for real boating and fishing but the campgrounds stay reasonably quiet, and the swimming areas are shallow and kid-friendly. Because the camping areas are spread out, it is worth asking which loop suits you before booking: some sit right on the water, others are set back in the woods. It pairs naturally with the Talimena Scenic Drive an hour to the west.

Letchworth is seventeen miles long, which is exactly why staying inside it matters: from the Highbanks camping area you can reach the three main waterfalls, the overlooks and the trailheads without repeatedly driving in from outside. The park has a large campground plus rental cabins in the woods, along with a swimming pool complex that saves many hot afternoons. Sunrise over the gorge with the mist still in it is the reason people book a second night. Autumn foliage weekends are the busiest of the year.

A state campground between Lewey Lake and Indian Lake in the central Adirondacks, with a swimming beach, a boat launch and direct access to trails heading into the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. Because it sits between two bodies of water, you get a sheltered small lake for kids to paddle and a big one for fishing and boating, without moving the car. The setting under Snowy Mountain is dramatic and the campground rarely feels as packed as the Lake George area. Cell service is essentially nonexistent, which some families count as a feature.

One of the larger state campgrounds in the central Adirondacks, on a clear lake outside Inlet with a sandy swimming beach and a boat launch. Sites are scattered through pine woods and a good number sit within sight of the water. The lake is big enough to paddle for an afternoon without being so big that wind becomes a problem for kids in kayaks. Inlet and Old Forge are both close for supplies and a rainy-day plan, and the Moose River Plains wild forest road starts at the campground gate.

The largest body of water in the Catskills outside the reservoirs, and the only Catskill state campground built around a swimming pond with a real sandy beach. Sites are spread through the woods around the shoreline and motors are not allowed, so the water stays calm for kids in kayaks and rowboats. Trails from the campground connect into the Big Indian Wilderness for longer hikes. Livingston Manor and the Beaverkill fly-fishing water are close by, and it is well under three hours from New York City.

A state campground on a small quiet lake just outside Old Forge, which makes it the practical base for a western Adirondacks family trip. The lake has a sandy swimming beach and a flat loop trail that circles the whole shoreline in an easy couple of hours. Old Forge itself is three minutes away, meaning the Enchanted Forest water park, the Fulton Chain boat tours and actual restaurants are all within reach on a rainy afternoon. Sites are wooded and spread out enough to feel like camping rather than a parking lot.
