Adventures in Cedar Hill, TX
Cedar Hill punches well above its weight for outdoor adventure, and its location just 20 minutes south of Dallas makes it one of the most accessible nature destinations in the DFW metroplex.
What to Do
Cedar Hill State Park on the shores of Joe Pool Lake is the main attraction - a 1,800-acre park offering swimming at a sandy lake beach, fishing from shore, mountain biking on the DORBA trails (15 miles of singletrack), and hiking the scenic Talala Trail loop. The historic Penn Farm Agricultural History Center inside the park gives kids a glimpse of 19th-century Texas farm life. With 350 campsites, it’s also one of the most popular camping spots near Dallas.
Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center provides a completely different experience - naturalist-led hikes, birding programs, and hands-on nature education for kids. The trails here wind through bottomland forest along a creek, and the center runs seasonal programs year-round including nature camps and guided family walks.
Day Trip Plan
A great Cedar Hill day trip starts with a morning hike on the Talala Trail at Cedar Hill State Park (2.5 miles, moderate), followed by lunch at the park’s picnic pavilions and an afternoon swim at the beach. If you still have energy, drive 10 minutes to Dogwood Canyon for a late afternoon nature walk before heading home.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are perfect for hiking and biking - temperatures are mild and wildflowers pop in April. Summer is swimming season at Joe Pool Lake, but arrive before 10 AM on weekends - the beach parking lot fills early. Winter is surprisingly pleasant for trail riding and birdwatching.
Good to Know
Cedar Hill State Park charges $5/day per adult (kids 12 and under free). The Texas State Parks Pass ($70/year) covers entrance fees. Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center is free but accepts donations. Both destinations have restrooms and water fountains.
