Adventures in Daingerfield, TX
Daingerfield is a small northeast Texas town known for one thing among outdoor families - Daingerfield State Park, home to the best fall foliage in Texas. But this intimate, scenic park is worth visiting in every season.
What to Do
Daingerfield State Park wraps around a spring-fed lake surrounded by hardwood forests - one of the only places in Texas where you’ll see maples, oaks, and sweetgums explode with reds, oranges, and golds in autumn. The 507-acre park is small enough that kids can roam freely but packed with activities.
Swimming: The small swim beach on the lake is calm and clean, with a gentle sandy entry perfect for younger kids. Fishing: The pier is stocked with bass, catfish, and perch - a great spot for kids learning to fish. Paddling: Rent paddleboats or canoes and explore the scenic lake. Hiking: About 2.5 miles of trails wind through dense hardwood and pine forest - the Rustling Leaves Nature Trail is short and easy for little legs, while the lakeside trail offers beautiful water views.
Camping and Cabins
The park has tent sites, RV hookups, and historic CCC-era cabins that are among the most charming in the state park system. The stone cabins have fireplaces and screened porches overlooking the forest - they book up months in advance for fall color season. Lakeside tent sites are the next-best option.
Weekend Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and set up camp. Afternoon swim at the beach and fishing from the pier. Evening campfire.
Day 2: Morning hike on the lakeside trail (peak fall colors are breathtaking). Rent paddleboats after lunch and explore the lake. In spring, look for wildflowers along the Rustling Leaves trail.
Getting There
Daingerfield is about 2 hours east of Dallas via I-30 and US 259. The town has basic services - gas and a few restaurants. Bring groceries for camping.
Best Time to Visit
Late October through mid-November for peak fall foliage - this is the park’s marquee season and the closest thing to New England colors you’ll find in Texas. Summer is great for swimming and paddleboating. Spring wildflowers are lovely and the park is uncrowded.
Good to Know
$4/day adults, kids 12 and under free. Camping $12-$20/night. Reserve CCC cabins well in advance for October-November. The park is rarely crowded except during peak fall color weekends.
