Fort Worth offers a remarkable range of outdoor adventures without leaving city limits - from bison herds and prairie trails to 100+ miles of paved riverside paths. It’s one of the best cities in Texas for families who want nature right outside their door.

Top Adventures

Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge is the crown jewel - 3,600 acres of native habitat protecting one of the largest urban nature centers in the country. Kids can spot the resident bison herd, explore trails through cross timbers forest and bottomland, and visit the Hardwicke Interpretive Center. The Shoreline Trail along Lake Worth is especially scenic.

Trinity Trails is a 100+ mile paved trail network following the Trinity River through the city. It’s free, flat, and perfect for family biking, walking, and scootering. The trail connects to the Fort Worth Zoo, the Botanic Garden, and dozens of parks with playgrounds and splash pads.

Tandy Hills Natural Area preserves one of the last intact sections of Fort Worth Prairie. In spring, the wildflower display is stunning - bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and dozens of prairie species bloom across the hilltop. The trails are short and easy, making this a quick but rewarding nature stop.

Gateway Park on the east side offers mountain biking trails, a disc golf course, and access to Trinity Trails along a scenic stretch of the river.

Day Trip Plan

Morning: Hike at Fort Worth Nature Center (allow 2-3 hours to see the bison and walk the Shoreline Trail). Lunch at a family restaurant along Camp Bowie Boulevard. Afternoon: Rent bikes or bring your own and ride Trinity Trails from Trinity Park toward the Botanic Garden. If the kids still have energy, the Fort Worth Zoo is right on the trail.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Spring (March-May) brings wildflowers and comfortable hiking weather. Fall is perfect for biking. Summer mornings on Trinity Trails are great before the heat builds. Winter is mild enough for most outdoor activities.

Good to Know

Fort Worth Nature Center charges $5/adult, $3/kids 3-17. Trinity Trails, Tandy Hills, and Gateway Park are all free. Fort Worth is one of the most bike-friendly cities in Texas - the trail infrastructure is outstanding.
