Adventures in Georgetown, TX

Georgetown is what a lot of Central Texas families actually want out of a day trip: about 30 minutes north of Austin on I-35, five solid options within a short drive of each other, and enough variety that you can pivot when the weather does not cooperate. Two of the five are free, one is underground and 72 degrees no matter what August is doing outside, and one is a 26-mile trail you can take in whatever bite size your kids can handle.

Why Families Love Georgetown

San Gabriel Park is the anchor and it does not cost a thing. It sits where the two forks of the San Gabriel River meet, under live oaks that have been there for two centuries. The wooden playscape is one of the best in the state and kids can genuinely burn an entire afternoon on it. The 1.6-mile crushed-granite loop is flat and wide enough for a stroller and a bike side by side, it has evening lighting for later visits, and there is river fishing for the kid who wants something quieter after the playground. Bring bikes and poles and you have covered a whole morning.

Garey Park is the all-day option: 525 acres along the South San Gabriel River with trails ranging from flat strolls to real Hill Country inclines, catch-and-release fishing ponds that do not require any experience, a splash pad and modern playground for the younger crowd, big shaded picnic grounds, and a dog park. Non-residents pay around $10 per car at the entrance kiosk, and Tuesdays are free from September through May, which is the move if you can swing a weekday.

When It Is Too Hot to Be Outside

Inner Space Cavern sits right off the I-35 frontage road and holds a constant 72 degrees year-round, which makes it the best heat-escape in the Austin area. The one-mile paved Adventure Tour is guided and paced well for families with younger kids, and the cave still contains Ice Age fossils of mammoths and giant sloths, discovered in 1963 when highway crews drilled into it. Tours leave every 20 to 30 minutes so you rarely wait long. Expect roughly $24 for adults and $15 for kids 4 to 12. Bring a light jacket, wear closed-toe shoes because they are required, and skip the stroller.

For Kids Who Want a Real Hike

The Good Water Trail circles Lake Georgetown for 26.5 miles, which sounds intimidating until you realize several trailheads let you hike whatever section you want and turn around. The Overlook segment has the canyon views and the Cedar Breaks section runs along the shoreline. It is free, it is rugged Hill Country limestone, and sturdy shoes are not optional. Best for ages 5 and up.

Cedar Breaks Park is the same lake from the water side: a well-kept Army Corps campground with large, well-spaced sites under mature oaks, a swim beach, an accessible fishing pier, and a big playground. It connects straight to the Good Water Trail. Day use runs about $4 per vehicle and camping is roughly $18 to $30 a night.

A Perfect Georgetown Weekend

Saturday: Camp at Cedar Breaks Park and hike a section of the Good Water Trail from the campground in the morning, then swim at the beach in the afternoon.

Sunday: Morning cave tour at Inner Space Cavern, then finish at San Gabriel Park so the kids get one last run at the playscape before the drive home. If you only have one day, do Garey Park in the morning and Inner Space in the afternoon.

Getting There

Georgetown is about 30 minutes north of downtown Austin on I-35 and roughly 3 hours from Dallas. Inner Space Cavern is the easiest stop in the area to reach, sitting on the frontage road with its own large free lot. Everything else has ample free parking, though Garey Park charges at the gate rather than the lot.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall are the comfortable stretch for hiking and camping. Summer is doable if you flip the schedule: cave in the middle of the day, splash pad or lakeside in the evening once it cools. Inner Space Cavern is genuinely year-round.
