Glen Rose punches so far above its weight that it is genuinely one of the best family day trips in Texas. In one small town southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth, kids can stand inside real 113-million-year-old dinosaur footprints in the morning and feed a giraffe out of a car window in the afternoon. The two headline attractions are fifteen minutes apart. If you have ever wondered where to take a dinosaur-obsessed six-year-old, this is the answer.

Why Families Love Glen Rose

Dinosaur Valley State Park is the reason most families come. The Paluxy River runs over a shallow limestone bed where real dinosaur trackways are preserved, and kids can walk right up and put their own feet in them. It is one of those rare experiences that lands equally well at four and at fourteen. In warmer months the river itself is shallow enough for wading and splashing, so bring water shoes and plan for everyone to get wet. Beyond the tracks there are more than 20 miles of trail through limestone bluffs and cedar forest, and the Junior Ranger Explorer Packs give younger kids a scavenger hunt that keeps them engaged the whole visit. Entry is about $7 a day for ages 13 and up, free for kids 12 and under. Give it four hours.

One caveat: the tracks are best when the river is low and clear. After heavy rain they are underwater, so check park conditions before you drive out.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is the other half of the day and the closest thing to an African safari you can do in Texas. You drive your own car along a 9.5-mile route through 1,800 acres while giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more than 50 other species roam loose around you. Buy a bag of feed at the entrance, because at some point a giraffe will lean its head through the window, and that is the moment your kids will talk about for weeks. Fossil Rim is also one of the country’s top cheetah breeding centers. Midway through the drive, the Overlook has restrooms, a cafe, a gift shop, a petting pasture, and some of the best Hill Country views in the region.

Expect around $38 for adults and $30 for kids 3 to 11, with under 3 free, and book timed-entry tickets online before you go. Weekends and school holidays regularly sell out. The drive takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace with feeding stops. Two tips: go early or late when the animals are actually active, and keep your windows partway up around the ostriches, who are bold about grabbing whole feed bags.

Staying Overnight

Rough Creek Lodge is the splurge option: a resort on 11,000 acres of ranchland with horseback riding, fishing, archery, and guided nature hikes. Rooms start around $300 a night and activity packages vary, so this is a special-occasion trip rather than a default. Best for kids 5 and up who are ready to actually do the activities.

A Perfect Glen Rose Day

Fossil Rim first thing in the morning, when the animals are most active and before the heat makes them sleepy. Break for lunch in town. Then head to Dinosaur Valley State Park in the afternoon, when the river wading is most welcome anyway. The two are fifteen minutes apart, so it is an easy single day, if a full one.

If you would rather split it across two days, do the park on day one, camp there, and hit Fossil Rim early on day two.

Getting There

Glen Rose is about 90 minutes southwest of Dallas and roughly an hour south of Fort Worth. It is a small town, so fill up on gas and grab groceries before you head out to the parks if you are camping.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall are the sweet spot. Spring brings baby animals at Fossil Rim and comfortable trail weather at Dinosaur Valley, though it is also the wettest season, which is what covers the tracks. Fall has the best driving weather for the safari route. Summer works if you go early and lean on the river. Weekdays anytime avoid the Fossil Rim sellouts.
